1. Hard core hippies left the cities
starting in 1967. They saw what was coming down in the way of wannabes who settled for sex and drugs and rock and roll and thought it was the real deal. The few who remained in the cities because of jobs and families (yes, we had both) pretty quickly dropped the outward symbols to distance themselves from the increasingly violent wannabes.

Thompson is correct about the wave analogy. We did crest briefly and then disperse.

It was a beautiful crest, though.
