Water Event: 8 people dead and 54 missing after an accident at Russia's largest hydropower station.
Edited on Mon Aug-17-09 11:26 AM by cherokeeprogressive
"The number of dead was confirmed by RusHydro spokesman Yevgeny Druzyaka, who spoke by phone from the plant. At least 54 workers are missing, the Investigative Committee of the General Prosecutor’s Office said on its Web site, blaming the accident on an oil transformer explosion. Fourteen or more people working in the turbine room were injured and rescue work continues, said Yelena Vishnyakova, another RusHydro spokeswoman."

Time to rethink hydroelectric power? I remember seing a post a couple of weeks ago about a transformer fire at a nuclear plant in Russia. Those damn transformers will be the death of us all.

2. Ironically hydro electric kills a magnitude more than nuclear (including chernobyl).
It is actually a rather dangerous (although clean) form of power. Think about it a dam is artificially holding back millions of gallons of water at tremendous height. The potential energy in a reservoir of water if massive and it is held back by man-made components subject to stress, age, and time.

5. Down with Hydro Power! Besides, where are they going to store all the water when done with it

Not in my Yucca mountain they aren't!

Seriously, a transformer failure has little to nothing to do with the underling power plant anymore here than it did when it was at a nuclear plant. With that many people missing it must have been one doozie of a transformer.
