help, please! Time for TECHIE SUPPORT, folks.
we learned today that the White house lost all those illegal e-mails.

right.

now, then. We need to start writing the press, the MSM, the idiots who swallowed that whole, and start educating them as to the reality about e-mail systems.
So, knowing that we have some truly educated folks here, let's lay it on them.

'splain it to us, so we can 'splain it to them.

and thanks for your help!

3. How much more do we take folks?
Deployments increased by 25%

Use of non-govermental servers for e-mail to avoid oversight, and when they are about to be subpoenaed, the messages are mishandled? Bull...

What's it going to take before we say screw it and head for DC with the pitchforks?

4. One would think wheat farmers would already be heading there
upon hearing about the (contaminated) wheat from China sent to a pet food plant in KANSAS!!!

What DOES it take?

11. Yes, literally. I've had it.
The freaks are lawless criminals. If they don't get stopped soon, it will only become harder to stop them in the future. We have already waited too long.

14. Completely agree with you.
But this country is a long way off from the "pitchforks" stage. I too stand aghast at what this monkey has done to our country, and hope that one day, the Bush family stain is permanently removed from our land.

7. well, when you IT wants to hide it, emails can disappear forever, don't forget
we can ask for all the hard drives and servers and backups we want. But if the private company's IT wants those to go away forever, they already have.

8. I love TPM's suggestion
I feel really bad about the server problems the White House/RNC seems (no, not a typo -- they appear to be a single entity) to be having on the email front. Believe me, I run a small business that is heavily dependent on cranky servers and other gizmos. So I know how hard this can be. But I think this might be a case where that NSA 'terrorist surveillance program' may really come in handy. I'm told the NSA has some very capable data recovery tools they've developed. And even if those guys are too busy hunting al Qaida, doesn't the FBI have some pretty good forensic computer geeks?

12. yes, if they secured the premises, and all backup tapes, including
those sent to Iron Mountain or wherever for archive they might be able to sift through it all and find stuff. But they would never know what they were not finding. It could be a long, tedious, and ultimately fruitless search through billions of zeroes and ones

Since the RNC systems were not subject to legal retention policies, all they have to do is say backups? what backups?

Chances are there are tons of emails still there, intact, but the indices/header files have been deleted. Rebuilding those might be possible, but tedious. As you say, though, we have spooks who do just that.

13. e-mail is persistent
It's got to be on one of the many servers through which it passed.
barring that, theyre probably present on the Cons hard drives as "deleted" information.
this can be easily recovered as well.
