Pelosi: 'There Is Strong Support In The House For A Public Option'
By Versha Sharma - August 17, 2009, 3:40PM

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) released the following statement on health care reform on Monday, August 17:

"As the President stated in March, 'The thinking on the public option has been that it gives consumers more choices and it helps keep the private sector honest, because there's some competition out there.'

"We agree with the President that a public option will keep insurance companies honest and increase competition.

"There is strong support in the House for a public option. In the House, all three of our bills contain a public option, as does the bill from the Senate HELP Committee.

"A public option is the best option to lower costs, improve the quality of health care, ensure choice and expand coverage.

"The public option brings real reform to lower costs over the 10-year period of the bill."

2. I've had nothing bad to say about Speaker Pelosi in months.
She's really surprised me by being the person I thought she was in the first place. Then there's Reid...

6. Thankful for her
I think it's going to be much harder to defeat public option in the house. We have a lot more real Democrats there.

7. Thank you Speaker Pelosi
I love the job she's doing. The Pelosi bashing by some gets tiresome here at times.

8. Pelosi thinks the Progressive Caucus is bluffing on the Public Option.
She said, "Are you asking me, 'Are the progressives going to take down universal, quality, affordable health care for all Americans?' I don't think so," Pelosi told reporters Friday, breaking into laughter at the question.

Pelosi is being a good soldier for the administration. I think she will knife the progressive caucus in the back, if she has to, to score a political "win" for Obama on this issue.

9. But mandates without cost control and regulatory measures is just giving insurance
companies everything they want.

I hope that the house's voice will force the Senate 4-5 to go in line. But frankly, I think there is disrespect in the Senate towards the House which frankly isn't deserved. At least more people in the house follow their constituents wishes instead of the corporations.

12. I agree.
I think the individual mandate is a terrible idea.

But Pelosi is a team player. She wants Democrats to "win," and she doesn't seem to care whether the legislation we pass does any good.
