Question for those who were at Woodstock,
I'm wondering if I can put a little dent in a myth.

It's part of the 'myth' that everyone was stoned out of their gourds at Woodstock.
My personal experience was somewhat different, especially if you compare it to many shows and festivals today.

Most people seemed aware that some assholes had brought a lot of bad acid, so after the first day, it didn't seem like most of the folks were very tripped out. There was really not much pot at all, so you couldn't just "smell it in the air". People were happy to take a few hits on a joint.
Alcohol was not nearly as popular, but of course people brought some, but how much can one carry?
My friend and I brought a few joints and a hit of acid that we split.

The media and all, made a big deal about the "drugs", but it was really very mild in comparison to so many other events.
Maybe that's why many of us DO remember it?

was that your impression?

1. My mil was there, and she wasn't on anything.
Neither was her sister that she came with. I realize that's just anecdotal, but, it's a couple more bodies in support of your argument.

3. I was not there, but my sister was...
and many friends. Sure, most folks brought enough joints to pass among friends for the days they were there. At that point in time, there was a lot of acid and mesceline around...so, I expect there was a good amount of use. The stories that came back were all about the music and the great experience of connecting with so many folks of the time. Lots of funny stories about no toilets that worked, etc. One friend walked all the way to town to use a public toilet only to find it locked with out of order sign on it. She kicked down the door....ha! we still laugh about that one. It was a different time...and it is almost impossible to discribe to folks who did not live in that time. It was an era that had much more good in it than may ever be reported.

5. for those who might remember
the Summer of '69 was the Great Pot Famine in most of the country, courtesy of President Nixon and Operation Intercept...so pot was not in abundance that summer, although I imagine that what was available found it's way up to Woodstock

6. I wasn't there
and most of the people I know who were there were working on the show.

I know backstage there was plenty of pot, but they stayed away from the heavier stuff because they had a job to do.

What people need to know is that half a million people came together for three days in unspeakably foul conditions and remained peaceful and joyful.

8. Exactly, and that is the part of the hippie movement
that nobody outside it ever seems to understand.
