Honduran Deputy Foreign Minister: US Involved in Honduran Coup
Edited on Mon Aug-17-09 03:53 PM by Truth2Tell
From Irish Times:

Sunday, August 16, 2009

A senior official in Honduras' deposed government claims there was US involvement in the coup that removed President Manuel Zelaya from power.

Patricia Valle, who served as Zelaya's deputy foreign minister, has claimed the plane that flew him into exile stopped at an airfield manned by hundreds of American troops.

Ms Valle said the Honduran military aircraft took off from the capital's Toncontin airport, then landed to take on fuel at the Soto Cano base before heading to Costa Rica. She says Zelaya stayed on the plane during the stop.

...

Palmerola was used by the United States during the Central American civil wars of the 1980s. US Air Force personnel are responsible for maintaining the airfield and share air traffic control duties with Honduran authorities, according to the Joint Task Force-Bravo Web site.

...

Washington has suspended millions of dollars in military and development aid to Honduras, one of the poorest countries in the Western Hemisphere. But it has stopped short of imposing trade sanctions that could cripple the Honduran economy, which is highly dependent on exports to the United States.

Hmmmm... not definitive, but compelling.

1. Not new data...they landed and refueled at a Columbian airfield
where US personnel were also located. Other reports have said there was no indication of US personnel near the plane or aware of its passengers.

2. "were also located" or run the place?
Either way, yer right, no smoking gun.

Although I still submit that the Obama/Hillary foreign policy team has yawned this whole thing off.

4. Were colocated
There are other events, supported by multiple parties (important IMO) that we had a serious clue something big was about to happen.

5. When you are not running the airbase and other countries planes are coming and going
the US personnel on the ground may well not have known. Field grade personnel are often not kept uptodate on those kind of things.

That something big was brewing in Honduras was pretty clear to the higher levels of the US Gov at a minimum.

6. If we are unwittingly facilitating coups, we need to lock down our airfields

pending an investigation. This is a very serious security breach -- if you believe it for a moment.

7. It was not our airfield to lock down. Its permissive use under Columbian control.
