If you still support prosecution of those who authorized torture, please recommend.
I realize that health care reform is the topic of the day, but let's don't forget this basic human rights issue. During the Bush administration, the leaders of our nation started to take us down a very slippery slope into a might-makes-right regime. We need investigations into the historical context in which we have defined torture in our law and military and civilian practice. We need a clear definition of torture that will not permit future governments to turn to lawless cruelty in order to assert their control over individuals.

I would like to see a thorough public investigation and, if appropriate, indictments of those who authorized torture. Who is with me?

We're supposed to let it slide while entertaining the possibility that we won't get any meaningful reform.

16. Why do you live in the past?
Why do many on this site consider torture worse than murder which is committed hundreds of times daily in this country?

Is torturing an enemy to possibly save American lives worse that an American killing another American in cold blood? Rational, coherent people think not.

21. Nobody feels that torture is worse than murder
and we don't discriminate on account of ethnicity or national origin.

But I assume you are talking about abortion?

Or gun control?

Living in the past is not what anyone is doing. Is it living in the past to arrest a criminal for murder? Or expose a war crime or crime against humanity and hold the perps accountable?

Now as for Americans killing Americans I will add this: those who are tortured are helpless prisoners. Defenseless.

I suppose you might make that same argument regarding the unborn if that is your point.

Eliminating poverty (with universal heeathcare) and locking up fascists who commit war crimes and crimes against humanity would go far to reduce crime of all sorts in the US AND might have a positive impact on reducing abortions (again if that is your point).

Oh hell!

What WAS your point?

20. The Bush administration will not be held accountable
For their gross violations of international law.

... and for their minor violations, which are the only ones that could conceivably be prosecuted. The blatant injustice is obvious and odious.

that half the population has been brainwashed by infotainment and scurrilous propaganda like "24" to think that torture is justifiable.
