I called the White House: 202-456-1111, spoke to a nice young man
He asked me if I wanted to leave a message for the President :) Made me feel very important!

I told him I wanted the President to know that my family and I are behind him 100% for the Public Option.

And added a specific request: Let all of us uninsured and under insured buy into Medicare!

It took me about 10 tries, then was on hold for about 8 minutes, that's it...Please call.

1. They are closed now
I just called and was startled for a minute not to get the same busy signal I've been getting all day. Keep it up folks....If you haven't gotten through yet call tomorrow...Lives depend on us making it clear that we need to have the Public Option. (Though I always push for the whole enchilada--Universal Single Payer Please!)

2. A message that the president will never see nor hear...
Unfortunately.

It makes us feel good to call congressmen and the president and leave messages, but our elected officials will never read nor hear exactly what we try to the tell them.

They say we have a "representative" democracy, but I'm not so sure.

4. No they don't read each message, but they do keep track of the messages by topic & caller's position
What each of them then does with this list varies.

But it is not a waste of time.

5. I understand the discouragement, but
I know I have seen huge public outcries change things. What it can do is give those who want to push for something the political cover to do it. If the President or your rep can say, "My calls are running 10 to 1 in favor of a public option," it helps a lot. Lately, the tantrum throwing corporate hacks at the town halls are getting all the attention. Politicians in favor of public option need something to point to such as massive calls, faxes, emails, letters. Just a thought.

7. Not necessarily
My rep is mike pence and he told me he gets about 200 emails a week, and that he personally reads every one of them. Naturally a senator or president is probably not going to be able to keep up with all of his mail, my my representative told me he has (representatives only cover about 500-800k people though). I have also talked to him in person in town hall meetings, and had him personally respond to my emails once.

So it isn't a total waste of time. I wouldn't be surprised if senators in states with low populations (less than 2 million) personally read many of the emails sent to them. I also remember not long ago someone talking about calling Conyers office about impeachment and ending up talking to him instead of an assistant, I guess the assistant was busy.

And I think I'll be auto redialing the White House tomorrow until I get in. I've never called there before. :-)
