1. Any intelligent gun owner wouldn't carry a rifle...
It's heavy and too big to use in a quick manner. Not to mention, you cannot conceal it. So you have a big ass target on your forehead for any criminal looking to silence possible tough guys.

2. Short of asking them, how would I know?
I have seen people with both rifles and shotguns. Now, with out stopping and saying.. Hey, Bud, what are you carrying that for? I wouldn't know if it was self defense, if they were coming back from hunting, or on their way to the range.

3. I was stopped by a cop once while carrying a rifle to a gunsmith
Edited on Mon Aug-17-09 07:06 PM by ThomWV
It was in a city and I had parked my car and had to walk down the sidewalk for about 50 yards to a gunshop that had a gunsmith that was going to do a repair for me. It was a rifle, the bolt was removed, and the internal magazine was empty. The cop wasn't a bit pleasant but fuck him, I told him where I was going with it, showed him the empty action, and then went on my way.

6. My point is about the AR-15 at a political rally
People don't normally carry those on a surburban/urban area - so these fools doing so now are showing it isn't about gun rights but intimidation of others.

5. I carry a shot gun at work
transport it in the open to and from work. Cops do not have a problem with it. Work in Newport News VA
