Sen. Kerry has hip surgery to address chronic pain - Pics of Sen. Kerry
Sen. Kerry has hip surgery to address chronic pain
2 hrs 31 mins ago

BOSTON – Sen. John Kerry and his daughter Vanessa are sporting his-and-her crutches.

The Massachusetts Democrat had surgery last week on his right hip to address chronic pain and flexibility problems.

The surgery was performed at Massachusetts General Hospital and Kerry was discharged after five days.

"It's the accumulation of 65 years of hockey, lacrosse, skiing, marathon-running, just abuse and, frankly, a little bit of degeneration over that time," the senator said Monday in a telephone interview.

Kerry's daughter also had surgery to repair nerve damage on the bottom of her left foot. Kerry spokeswoman Brigid O'Rourke said Vanessa, a doctor and third-year resident, is getting married this fall "and wanted to be able to dance at her wedding."

The usually clean-shaven Kerry sported a beard for the ceremony, but he said it's only temporary during his recovery.

"My wife doesn't want me standing at the sink, shaving," he said.

5. He should keep it!!
I don't like facial hair on men - women, yeah, it's interesting - but Kerry's one of the rare few who looks better with the beard.

I'm so surprised, but this is a nice surprise...............................

3. I hope he is fully recovered soon
It is amazing that within the last year, he even played ice hockey for a fund raiser for a charity. He looks incredibly happy in the top picture at his friend's swearing in. I've never see a photo, even from the sixties of Kerry with a beard.

20. For a politician, it miht be they fear a reaction like the one Gore faced
where the media bashed him for a beard and weight gain.

16. Exactly
What I don't get is that Kerry did nothing to deserve that type of comment - unless it is that he has been a serious, good person, who has always been on our side.

13. I'm planning on waiting until at least age 65 to replace mine. The orthopedic surgeon
wants to do it now, I've told him he's going to have to practice into his late 70's to get any money for it.

18. A quick recovery to the Senator and his daughter!
I love pictures of them -- they seem to share such a special bond. He does look amazing with the beard. I still like him clean-shaven better, but wow, great look!! I bet that's going to be a very happy wedding for the whole family.

29. Yep. Not bad
I remember when Gore had one and he was unfairly bashed for it. :(

OTOH: Best wishes to Senator Kerry and Vanessa. Hope they have a swift recovery. :patriot:

25. The fact that millions of Americans do not have coverage is not his fault
In fact, along with Hatch and Kennedy, he is responsible for getting health insurance for millions of kids. He wrote the precursor bill for SCHIP with Kennedy. He had a very ambitious plan for healthcare in 2004. He, like many before him, spoke of how this was a right and a moral imperative. In addition, his wife's foundation has given grants to clinics in under served areas.

Kerry himself spoke many times in 2004 and since about how everyone deserved the access to healthcare that he has.

So, why write this snark in response to his getting needed surgery?

30. *crickets*
Yep. Peeps are acting like he is single-handedly handcuffing the rest of America and soaking up all the healthcare benefits.

I am without health insurance too, but me prefers to go after the ones who are holding up progress instead of the ones that are on our side.

But facts never get in the way of snarky posts.

He is rich and THK far richer, but they both have given much back in return.
