I was here for Gloria back in '85, and with gusts barely making it to 115 it seemed half the trees out here were uprooted. Lots of building damage, and we didn't get power back for two weeks. (Greenport had its own power plant and bought more power from NY Power Authority, while we had LILCO-- anyone claiming private enterprise always beats a gummint operation should take a close look at how Greenport electric bills were less than half of ours, and their power stayed on during the hurricane.)

Southside in the Hamptons and Fire Island, maybe 40 or 50 beach houses were swept away.

Things are built stronger now, so shouldn't be too much of a problem here on the north side of the island even with higher winds, but anyone actually living down on the ocean side (most of the places are summer homes and on the Shinnecock Reservation should be worried.
