It was offered on another thread that Dr. Dean recently commented that any healthcare legislation is going to be voted against by the GOP and that Democrats should stop pandering to them. While absolutely true, I would prefer that an exellent spokesperson for Progressives like Dr. Dean would describe the situation even more succinctly and fundamentally. The fact is that meaningful healthcare reform is in danger not because of the GOP, but because certain Democrats that have been bought. Max Baucus must have been promised something great in return for taking the heat off of Democrats like Evan Bayh and others. It is a mistake to frame the debate as primarily between Republicans and Democrats because the real war is BETWEEN Democrats. The trick for guys like Bayh is to kill any meaningful reform without leaving his fingerprints on the murder weapon. The ONLY reason their is ANY discussion of "bipartisanship" is to give those Democrats that want to kill or maim meaningful healthcare an alibi.
Sadly, it also seems that in some respects, certain Democrats would PREFER the GOP have a majority in Congress. It gives them the perfect opportunity to serve the corporate interests that shower them with campaign cash while blaming it all on the GOP.
