Contemporary music for the Woodstock generation
I thought it would be fun to post a bunch of recent music that the people who attended Woodstock may like. This is not to create any kind of generational comparisons, arguments, or rivalries but merely to share some new music that some DUers may or may not have heard of, in the hope of carrying on the spirit of Woodstock and the music of the time.

So let's hear it. Please add your two cents, and share some great new music!

Here are some that come to mind for me (in alphabetical order, so if you hit something you hate just move on and sample the next thing):

Akron/Family - Everyone is Guilty
A pretty cool live jam that wouldn't have been out of place at Woodstock.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g6CnfK--w1k

Animal Collective - Who Could Win a Rabbit
IMO, one of the greatest bands currently going. This is one of their older, more folky songs. Maybe a bit of an acquired taste but had to be mentioned.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UTbd0Ncsyus

Devendra Banhart - At The Hop
Marc Bolan / Cat Stevens style singer-songwriter
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=91-ldjIQKHg

Beach House - Heart of Chambers
Beautiful, dreamy, melancholy songs with somewhat Grace Slick-esque vocals
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DNQ97P0rQk8

Black Mountain - Tyrants
Heavy progressive rock kinda thing
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cWxCPbsreO4

Blitzen Trapper - Wild Mountain Nation
This is a real feelgood back porch kind of jam that could have been a hit in '69 IMO.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zoY9qtHm6vs

Brightblack Morning Light - Everybody Daylight
Dreamy, druggy, sensual stuff that sounds a lot like the recent Robert Plant / Allison Krause collaboration.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wGJBXc5o-YU

Bonnie Prince Billy - I See A Darkness
AKA Will Oldham, Palace Brothers, Palace Music, etc. Amazing singer-songwriter with a somewhat rough voice (not unlike, say Dylan). It was tough to find a good video but he's great live and worth seeing if you get a chance.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y9d5j-QJIGU

Caribou - Melody Day
Psychedelic pop in the spirit of baroque pop bands like the Left Banke. His "Andorra" album is brilliant.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QklfmJ4vfLs

Comets on Fire - The Bee & The Crackin Egg / Dogwood Rust
Balls to the wall, sweaty, loud psychedelic rock.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q9jyKXDTQZQ

Dungen - Panda
Fantastic Swedish band with several consistently great psych rock albums out
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cj9XtgRwFBU

Entrance Band - Silence On A Crowded Train
Psych rock / blues power trio who are a kickass live band. None of the recordings or videos I've seen do them justice.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z2CH4WyhQVA

Espers - Cruel Storm
Beautiful and haunting folk ensemble, not unlike Pentangle or Fairport Convention.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iJE9aisdhpE

Faun Fables - Carousel with Madonnas
She sings kind of dark folk music and has an amazing voice. A must-see live act.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4m12p9Jos7w

Grizzly Bear - While You Wait For The Others
I wasn't going to include them as they can be a little to slick and poppy sometimes, but this live performance is great.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CxinSS5KJNg

Howlin Rain - Dancers At The End of Time
Another project of the dude from Comets on Fire (see above). Retro heavy jams
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8g8yGXNlXx4

Islands - Don't Call Me Whitney, Bobby
Haha, nice Sly Stone reference
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F2SSIcG8FH4

Panda Bear - Bros
If the Everly Bros had samplers
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FQUrf6DpXjc

Six Organs of Admittance - Sum of All Heaven/Black Needle Rhymes
Nice solo acoustic performance
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ry9qyeH-qpk

Tame Impala - Half Full Glass Of Wine
Pretty new band with only an EP out but the whole thing is great Cream-y style rock. Cool video too.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zfcHq0hhFWg

Vetiver - Maureen
Another folk ensemble. The sound quality here is bad but this is a really nice performance.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=37EY28ClbM0

White Magic
I couldn't find any good videos but she sounds almost exactly like Grace Slick. You can hear some clips here.

1. This is cool and informative. Thank you!

I have an iPod that has the same music on there for a few years, but it's my music.

I'm thinking I need to upgrade.

3. Very nice
there are several there I need to check out and several I will second. Blitzen Trapper, Bonnie Prince Billy, etc.

I'd also add Old Crow Medicine Show - Tennessee Pusher, and The Mendoza Line - 30 Year Low as a couple off the top of my head.

I'm a 50 something Dead-CSNY-variousjamband type and I love these guys. Go figure.

10. I haven't heard of Ghostland Observatory.
I like this one. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zGpn_HeTSgM&feature=related Interesting stage presence too!

You might dig some of the more recent, more electronic sounding Animal Collective stuff. I hesitated to post it because it's maybe not as "woodstock"-y.

Some I'm familiar with and some I'm not. Actually, in all of these Woodstock threads, the one thing that has been one of the weirdest themes ( imho) has been the "my music is better than yours" conflict. I was at Woodstock, but I think that some of the most interesting and innovative stuff in a long time is coming out now.In many ways, the relative openness of FM at the time and the openness of the net offer similar delivery systems and in both there is/ was a lot of freedom.

I can't take any credit for my current musical tastes. My oldest son is a musician ( psycho punk rockabilly) and played his first major festival this summer in Spain ; my youngest went to his first concert - Animal Collective - this past weekend. They both have turned me on to some amazing stuff.

Forgot to add: if you like Canadian Celtic try Enter the Haggis

14. I think I'm coming from the opposite perspective.
Too young to be at Woodstock (32) but probably 69% of my music collection is from that era. And yet I definitely think some exciting stuff is happening lately. And I don't say that out of any youthful exuberance or nostalgia. I think the period of my high school and college years (90s) was pretty dire music wise. The fact that the millennials have almost the same numbers as the boomers probably means they are going to have the power to do some pretty cool things that us Xers were unable to accomplish.

And I'm jealous that your youngest saw Animal Collective. I keep missing them or they sell out or cancel. Although judging from the videos they seem a little inconsistent live.

23. Yeah, the Beach Boys comparison is made a lot.
I really do think his solo album sounds more like the Everly Brothers though. I don't know why. This is probably their most Beach Boysish song though. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t69UYgeFDvY

I'll have to check out more Pink Dots. I heard a little of their stuff years ago but never really pursued it. They're one of those bands where it's kind of hard to find an entry point since their discography is so big. Any recommendations?

25. I'm not the expert...
Actually, most of what I listen to is older stuff, and I appreciate your list. My experience with the Pink Dots is mostly Youtube, and more recent, but I like their stuff.

Usually, I'm with Monk, Coltrane, Ellington, etc., but I like to know about all kinds of music.
