I've been taken by surprise and I don't think I'm the only one
I have over the years begun to believe that most political power is wielded in back rooms and that We The People have very little say one way or the other. I still mostly believe this, but this last election took me by surprise. Obama, while not himself a liberal populist, awoke the sleeping giant, the We The People and he and his party "benefited" greatly. Why did I put that in quotes? Well, see, that's the surprise, for me and for a good many a Dem power broker, that We The People actually do still have some power.

This brings up a big ol' problem for our team, call it Team Democrat. Because, in actuality, they primarily serve themselves and their highest donors, just like Team Republican. But Team Republican can fool their base into thinking they are being served. The Democratic base doesn't appear to be that easily duped. Now, when Team Democrat was in the minority, it was easy for them. They could throw up their hands, look at us beseechingly and say, "What can we do? Please send more money and keep voting for us. Someday.......". Well, in a groundswell of populist rage and hope, we gave them their Someday but now, it's harder for them to convince us that they really are working for us. Reference the ever higher bar that Harry Reid assures us is needed so that the change they really, really want to give us will happen. Notice the test balloons from the White House that keep getting shot down.

Our poor Team Democrat is a bit befuddled and more than a little nervous. Obama told us we had power, we believed him, and damn, he was right! Now, nobody is exactly sure how much power We The People really do have and just how uncomfortable that is going to make it for Team Democrat. Are they going to be able to remove the public option and make it seem like there was just no choice and if they do, what kind of power will We The People choose to wield? Are they actually going to have to do our bidding on this and heaven forbid, other things?

Not that I would ever want to be him, but I especially wouldn't want to be Rahm right now. I suspect he isn't sleeping all that well and is downing a ton of Tums and wishing his boss had never unleashed We The People.

1. Doesn't matter, We the People are going to be trumped by Corporate America
Doesn't matter what We the People want, it only matters that Corporate Money, the ones who are rigging this came, get their wishes fulfilled. After all, the common wisdom is "who you going to vote for, the 'Pugs? Har har, hardee har har!"

We need to have We the People that we can truly call the tune. Until then, this shell game of We the People is going to be proven empty time and again.

3. You may be right and I'm inclined to believe you are right
But, just as the Internet surprised the powers that be (and they are still scrambling to fix that fuck up) so has this uprising in combination with the added communication venues. If they adjust fast, we lose. If they don't or something else happens, well, it stops being a done deal. I find it a little interesting. I'm not often surprised - less so as I age. I like occasionally getting surprised in this manner. But I don't think the powers that be care for this one much at all.

2. You write well and if you have the time - I think you need to run a new blog - "Corporate Watch".
I hope we survive this with the health of the voters changed for the better.

It could even be called the Corporate/DLC Watch.

There are so many new voters - the risk to old and new voters will explode if the corporations win this.

People have to expose the power of the corporations and of the Republicans who go to war for them.

Take back the country means taking it back from the corporations. Cold, nasty, greedy = many authors and comic strip writers have introduced them and they are here with their full agenda,

Where is ours?

Every thing they succeed at demonstrates what fools we are to pay and pay and pay them.

4. Gosh, I don't think I write all that well but thank you so much for the compliment !
Nance Greggs writes well, Will Pitt writes well. Me, I throw in too many words. But I care, damn, I do care and yeah, I don't like the corporatists nor the DLC.

And time? Well, I'm quite lucky to still have a paying job (being a nurse means I'll likely be the last on the chopping block).

Hasn't Michael Moore been doing this for a long time already? Of course, he is derided as being a buffoon because he's pretty damn effective, isn't he?

5. Thank you, heartily. Because you distilled the message
that Obama gave us so succinctly during the campaign. And it is time for us to unload a huge red can of whup-ass on Team Dem, especially on the likes of Rahm who thinks he can slick his way by with his cronies.

I'm sick of this crap. I'm sick of having to fight R corruption and being expected to make excuses when Dems screw with us in the same way. it is time to put an end to it.

Keep hammering them everywhere. And if someone doesn't deliver, then I think the next elections should be based on a very simple theme--vote out any incumbent.

6. It was a delusion to believe Obama was really the "change" candidate
All that really changed was the letter after the name.

He is another lying scumbag politician and I knew it from the beginning. So I am not surprised. I know a lot of people had their illusions shattered because they believed all that tripe but I never liked him from the get-go and knew he was just another corporate tool who would betray the liberals sooner or later like all Democrats do.

8. Nothing is scarier to a monolithic capitalist than a well-informed, voting public
What's hilarious about the deathers and their town hall ambushes is that they're yelling at candidates who know they'll never get their votes anyway. The best they can do is say, "Do what we want or we'll jump up and down and yell!", while we get to say, "Do what you promised or you'll lose our vote".
