ALBUQUERQUE - Members of a Hispanic-rights group are calling for authorities to give up their Taser guns.

A crowd from the League of United Latin American Citizens chanted Saturday "Tasers are lethal, make them illegal" at Albuquerque's City Hall.

The protesters claim the weapon is deadly and authorities using it target ethnic minorities more frequently than whites.

"Our community and the African-American community are getting tased and getting killed by these taser guns," New Mexico's LULAC district director Ralph Arellanes said.

There have been 437 stun-gun deaths nationwide since the weapon was introduced in 2000, according to statistics compiled by LULAC, which is the nation's largest Hispanic civil-rights organization.

1. Background: 14-year-old girl needed 18 staples, 6 stitches to her head
after being shot with stun gun darts by the Tucamari Police Chief.

In July, Kailee Martinez, 14, was shot with stun gun darts in the hip and in the head by the Tucumcari Police Chief. It took 18 staples and six stitches to piece her head back together.
KRQE News 13

Kailee Martinez’s mother, Stacy Akin was taking Kailee to the police station due to some obscene materials on her daughter’s cell phone. The situation got out of control and Kailee took off running to a nearby park. The Chief of Police, Roger Hatcher, took off running after her. He stated “she was running blindly through traffic and she almost got hit.” When he almost caught up to her at the park she ran away once more. He felt the only way he could prevent her from running away again was to give her a taser dart. A shaved head, several staples and stitches Kailee is recovering slowly. Her parents believed that the dart penetrated too deeply into her skull and is making her pre-existing epilepsy act up.

10. Even as a non-Christian, I found the bias in your post bothersome...
Maybe, before assuming the worst, you should look them up first.

Not exactly a fly-by-night, "The BUY-bull is the BESTEST medicine" operation.

7. Thank you for that info!
That study didn't address abuse of authority, though, did it?

9. Not at all, but that problem exists with or without tasers
There's almost a million law enforcement officers in the US. It's a pretty safe bet that some of them are going to abuse authority and use whatever tools they have improperly (including guns). But that is a separate question from whether tasers are or aren't safe and if they should or should not be deployed.
