1. Except it is not.
Public Option is still paying money to insurance company. Granted the Company will be a Government Company it will still cost money to be a part of it. The Government will subsidize most that apply but not all. It is designed to compete with Private Insurance. That means charging a lower more competitive rate but it won't be free or a single payer system like Medicare.

5. Medicare Part A has no premium if you've paid taxes
Part A is more or less hospitalization.

For Part B--doctor's visits-- there is a premium, but it is very low: $96.40 if you earn $85K or less as an individual or $170K or less filing jointly.

For Part D--prescription drug--you have to sign up with a private company.

3. I believe you are correct ... and in addition
We all pay into Medicare through our payroll taxes. The public option as proposed in the several bills right now would simply be a premium to be paid by enrollees. I think people worry that they will have more taxes from a public option, as in Medicare. I guess we shouldn't promote that illusion, because it's not true.

So no, it's not really like Medicare.
