This is just my opinion, and it isn't something I've studied. I went to college and graduate school in Alabama and now live in Chattanooga TN.
Mississippi and Alabama are DEEP south. This is the place where cotton was king. There is a "black belt" of very rural, very poor predominately black counties, and in Alabama there are a few medium sized cities (Birmingham, Montgomery, Mobile, Hunstville). In both states there are high rates of poverty, poor education, etc.
South Carolina is more like Alabama and Missippi than North Carolina, in my opinion. In South Carolina there are some transplants who have moved there from other areas who live mainly around the ocean and coast (think Myrtle Beach). In North Carolina there are more transplants that have moved there from other areas. I want to say that the geography is different, but in a way, Alabama has mountains to the north, then flat plains in the middle, then coast, and North Carolina is sort of like that with Mountains to the west then tapering down to the coast. But North Carolina is closer to the atlantic coast states. North Carolina has a little less poverty and better education than Miss. or Al, and a really good higher education system.
Al. has some implants in Huntsville who work with high tech jobs, but there is much more of that in NC.
Also, you can find more yellow bbq sauce in the carolinas, it is more red in AL. and Miss., though there is a sort of "brown" in east AL. Also, football is more important in AL. Miss. and SC and basketball in NC. Personally, I'd put SC with Miss. and AL.
