Has anyone suggested "2nd Amendment zones" for protestors?
Like the fenced-in "1st Amendment zones" during the bush years, they could be placed there a couple of blocks from the event.

4. Neither had I, but it doesn't surprise me.
It's not like this has anything to do with actual gun-rights issues. Obama has actually been more friendly to gun owners than Bush was in some ways. It's just attention whoring.

14. Yup
It's hijacking whatever event is going on for their attention whoring on gun rights..

Or in this case it was trying to get governor/presidential nominee Bush to let a guy off death row before he was executed.

I believe it's illegal to open carry a pistol in Texas, so a rifle or shotgun would be the norm for that kind of thing.

Here's one from 2000 right after he went under secret service protection.

Texas state republican convention, 2000.

15. interesting ... from 2000, before George W. Bush was installed as President ...
and from Bush-friendly Faux, and they made sure that it was widely known: "Black Panthers" (corrected later to "an offshoot of the Black Panthers"; but hey, the Holocaust Museum shooter was a "lone wolf", despite his RW tendencies and followings) ... I saw that the "counter-protest" appeared to be two white guys talking ... and somebody walking away with a sign ...

And these guys at town halls with guns are likely from some offshoot of some kind of organization...

Whackos one and all, but they aren't breaking any laws.

I'm sure there are more instances of open carry to republican events, or any events.

17. I wonder if they would have been allowed within a mile of the convention center
(remember ... blacks with guns ... SCARY!) at this same point in Bush's pResidency ... especially since, at this point, Bush had the PDB mentioning Osama bin Laden readying attacks on the U.S. ...

18. I'm from Houston
Looks like they were right outside the convention center to me.

People with guns aren't something that scares some Texans... My high school parking lot had em in half the pickup trucks back windows for example.

If I see a guy walking with a gun my first thought is not that he's a danger... Unless he's pointing it at people and acting dangerously.

Now, if the clip was from the summer of 2001, that would be a whole different story.

24. Exactly. Threat to a sitting Prez is a national security issue; to a candidate, not really. I'd say
the same if it happened when * was pRez--but this didn't.

Mr. TX fails.

32. Hey
It's an open carry protest aimed at Bush, while he was under SS protection.

Is it the only one? I dunno..

Whackos come in all flavors though, and open carry laws or lack of law is what it is...

There are groups out there that intend to remind people open carry is legal by doing so at all times though, the more visible the better in there eyes. They tend to be the Ron Paul libertarian types that believe government should not step outside strict literal constitutional limits..

They seem to have gotten what they were after, growing the public knowledge that it is in fact legal in a lot if not most places. They may find out though that it might have been better not to poke that sleeping dog.

as was done in the previouse administration, is this "change we can believe in" or more like "same game, different names?"

27. They're not scary or disagreeable, they are a security threat
It's not like they are wearing a persnickety T-shirt or holding a snarky sign they are carrying a weapon and even if they have no intention of using it the Secret Service has to waste a pair of eyes baby sitting them as they stand in the general population, they dilute the available security thus posing a real risk and quite frankly if I have to take off my fucking shoes to get on a plane they can stand in an area for people wishing to carry weapons.

35. It appears that the secret service protective detail does not agree
with you.

The ones that should cause concern are the ones that can't be seen (book depository), or the ones who have weapons that can't be seen.

How many pairs of secret service eyes are in that detail? We don't know, but I betcha it's a bunch.
