Poll question: Focus. Focus. Cast your gaze this way
During the course of your day, how often do you forget about the death and destruction going on due to Bush's senseless and needless "wars" because another news item or important issue comes up?

2. I try not to think about the death and destruction caused by Bush's nedless War
in Iraq, and his mishandling of the necessary invasion of Afghanistan.

But generally I find that World of Warcraft distracts me enough that I don't need to bother with tabloid news.

34. I don't, but I see the point
The tabloid type things get much more interesting and get more threads. They are easier to think about, so we get drawn into them. If it was one thread, OK, but whenever these things happen, they get everybody interested and cause hundreds of threads, so there is some truth in the concept that we will spend more time on easier subjects. But I don't know that anything can be done about it - it appears to be an intractible part of human nature.

39. I consider some topics - of the tabloid nature - which isn't defined the
same by everyone - to be down time news. But that doesn't mean people forget the other things going on.

Anyway, it's a beautiful poll, one of the best I've seen. Therefore, I proudly state that I have not only voted in your poll; I have kicked up this thread AND voted to recommend.

That skews my vote, I suppose.

I s'pose I'd say: The sheer stupidity and senselessness of the whole Iraq debacle is always on my mind, but my bro-in-law on the ground is always on my mind.

Residents and Picayune High students line the streets as the hearse carrying the body of Army Staff Sgt. Jerry Clark Burge Jr. rolls through Picayune on Thursday.

A soldier's last ride
By J.R. WELSH
baybureau@aol.com

Under flawless blue skies and a bright sun, Army Staff Sgt. Jerry Burge, Jr. took his last ride Thursday down the main boulevard of the hometown he loved.

On his way out to Palestine Cemetery, the soldier who died in Iraq on April 4 was honored by hundreds. Students, teachers and ROTC cadets from Picayune High School lined Goodyear Boulevard, hands over hearts. Throughout the long drive out to Palestine Road, people stood in front of businesses, in driveways or on their porches, saying goodbye. The large funeral procession was led by 30 Patriot Guard motorcycle riders, city police and the Mississippi Highway Patrol.

"I feel just a total loss," said Rev. Glen Kennedy, Burge's uncle and lifelong mentor. "It's like a bad dream you think you're going to wake up from, and you don't."

Burge, 39, was a father of three and career soldier. As a member of the Iron Horse Brigade Combat Team with the First Cavalry Division, he knew well the heat of battle.
