An overflow crowd converged on a health care reform meeting held this afternoon by Sen. Ben Nelson, D-Neb.

Cars were lined up for blocks as people tried to get to the 1:30 p.m. session at the Durham Research Center Auditorium on the University of Nebraska Medical Center campus.

At 1:45 p.m., after the meeting had begun, the line of cars still stretched from the Durham building, down Emile Street from 45th to 42nd, and then north as far as Farnam Street.

About 300 people were in the same room as Nelson, and another 300 in an overflow room inside the Durham Center, officials said. Loud speakers were set up outside the building another 600 people were able to hear the meeting.

Nelson said he expected a large turnout. “It didn't surprise me that people are that interested in it,” he said. “It affects everybody.”

A sign warned attendees that no posters, banners or political materials were being allowed in the meeting. Several people outside were holding posters.

Nelson aides were walking through the crowd outside the building, distributing question cards for people to fill out.
