Men, Women Divided Over Sex Bill
Edited on Wed Aug-19-09 08:44 PM by ccharles000
There is a bill pending in the Bahamas which would outlaw marital rape, and it is facing a lot of opposition. There is a common theme in the arguments against it: see if you can figure out what it is.

"It is ridiculous for them to try to make that a law, because I don't think a man can rape his own wife. After two people get married, the Bible says that they become one - one flesh. How is it possible to rape what is yours?" asked Mr. Sutherland.

"Even if a woman says no to her husband it still can't be considered rape because she is his wife. He already paid his dues at the church and she already said 'I do,' so from then on, even if a man forces sex on his wife, it isn't rape," he said.

"I disagree with the bill because I disagree that a man can rape his wife. The Bible tells me that a man's body is his wife's and her body is his. How could he rape her?" asked Ms. Sweeting.

It looks to me as if being brought up with a belief in the literal truth of a misogynistic document like the Bible can inculcate the evil idea that women are possessions, and that marriage is an act of handing over a woman's bill of sale to a man. I thought a wife was a partner, not a slave.

4. The Bible tells me,,....
The Bible tells me that a man's body is his wife's and her body is his. How could he rape her?" asked Ms. Sweeting.

Equally true is when she decides to cut off your penis and beat you into unconciousness with it. I mean she paid her dues at the church already for christ sakes she should be allowed to do with her husband as she pleases.

5. What fun is it if the other person isn't willing?
All that bible bullshit aside, I physically couldn't rape anyone, especially someone I love. I wouldn't be able to perform with an unwilling partner. I just get over it and try again later. Those are some seriously sick people.

9. Yes. And thus my last comment. One of those quotes is from a woman by the way.
Sick people.

10. This just seems so absurd. Every last one of those morons should be forced to wear this...

There comes a point while examining a culture when one realizes the absurdity is so intense that they have no real solution to the problem. This is one of those situations.

Who the fuck managed to teach an entire people to believe this bullshit? Can we hang them from the tallest building?

not every day life.

there is a difference.

that being said

that in no way lessens, or dismisses the violence commited on man, by man while they sit out their punishment in prison

28. Males get raped outside of prison.
Males also get raped by their wives, boyfriends, strangers, etc.

It's discussed much less, perhaps because it occurs less, but it does happen.

17. Yup, conditioned from birth
The way I was taught - men are the masters of the universe and women.... look after the house, have babies - and other things.

That was in the 60s.

Perhaps the Bahamans haven't caught up with the rest of "western society".

really... the rest of "western society" isnt doing so great.

we are not so very progressive here. i think we might have taken a huge step backwards from the 70's and 80's.

the conditioning is not just whether women should be able to work and get equal pay.

25. I was just speaking in terms of attitude to women
And here in greater North America, the vast majority of society values and enables women.

I didn't say it was perfect, but if those Bahamians are representative of their land, they're way behind us in terms of "enlightened" societal attitudes towards women.

The same body, hunh?

Well I certainly hope women who are raped won't be prosecuted if they end up killing their husbands in retribution.

Hey, ...one body, and the Bible says, "if thy right eye offend thee, pluck it out, and cast it from thee:"

24. The acceptance by men and women is scary.
From the link to the link:

""Even if a woman says no to her husband it still can’t be considered rape because she is his wife. He already paid his dues at the church and she already said ‘I do,’ so from then on, even if forces sex on his wife, it isn’t rape," he said." (emphasis mine)

Sounds more like joining a club than joining in matrimony.
