Maybe it will be easier if we just say that we're going to extend Medicare

After all, it appears that many people love Medicare and don't even know it's a government program.
It actually might sell better!
HR676 is going to be put to a vote in the House next month.
Let's see what the polls say about this.

Of course, it's unclear whether Congress would vote for it, even if the polls were 99% in favor....

But, why not try?

18. I have to shake my head at this.
What do people think we've been screaming about for months? Do they know what "single payer" even means? And now, wow, someone comes up with a 'scathingly brilliant' idea of extending Medicare to everyone! What a concept!

Well, I can console myself in hoping that now people at least get it . . .

2. Of course it would.
That's exactly why it was removed "from the table" before the very first discussion in the Senate. It is easy to understand, would fulfill all the criteria that Pres. O keeps holding up as necessary, wouldn't require the setting up of any new administrative apparatus....

It would be hugely popular and would get Obama's spot in History cemented into place.

3. If others are correct, and the dye is cast, it will be a GOP Bill.
the WH and Congress are not really interested in what we think
or believe would be best for the country.

11. Is CBO checking HR 676 or does Rep. Weiner have a different single-payer he asked to be checked?
It's not clear to me from what has been released, just that he asked for "single-payer" to be evaluated by CBO.

6. You are right.
I have been thinking the same thing. That sounds like the best "public option" to me!

9. It has to do with money, as all these proposals do, and how it would
be funded.

And PS, the insurance companies are 'helping'. They wouldn't be pleased.

Sounds like a plan!

10. That's the obvious answer. Just say Medicare for all who choose it.
Everyone with medical insurance can keep what they have if they want to.

16. Yes, just make Medicare for All optional
Edited on Thu Aug-20-09 12:41 AM by andym
Then, everyone has a choice. People can keep their old insurance if they want, and Medicare gets an infusion of young healthy people to help keep it fiscally sound.

Essentially, Medicare would become the "public option."
