GOP senators: Torture investigation threatens ’security of all Americans’
http://rawstory.com/08/news/2009/08/19/gop-senators-torture/

This is EXTREMELY critical!

What exactly would be threat to American security posed by the very narrow torture investigation/prosecution (only go after people who exceed the "legal" authorization for "enhanced interrogation")?!?!? The answer is none.
{Note: The damage to country's reputation with World's nations has already been done. Everyone already assumes we did MUCH worse than waterboard of few guys and Abu Ghraib, many deaths of detainees while in custody etc. is already out there, so prosectution over some minor details would not make the situation worse than it already is. Rather it would be a first step to restore our credibility on the world stage.}

However, any investigation of torture would inevitibly have to deal with the fact that KSM, Zubaydah and other "high value detainees" for purpose of extracting (a known false) connection between Al Qaeda and Saddam's Iraq.

The nine GOP senators' letter is quoted as saying “The country would be better served if the Justice Department refocuses its priorities and allocates its resources to pressing matters — such as prosecuting the terrorists responsible for the September 11 attacks — instead of contemplating legal action against the men and women who have dedicated their lives to protecting this country,”

Well...this is the WHOLE point isn't it. As far as I know (and I have studied the subject in some detail), the ONLY "evidence" that KSM and Zubaydah had anything at all to do with 9/11 was testimony WAS EXTRACTED BY TORTURE and both men later said they admitted to several things that were actually not true just to make the torture stop.

Ironically, if the nine GOP senators got their wish, and there were a real prosectution of KSM and Zubaydah that followed the rule of law,(Habeus Corpus and all that other quaint stuff) all of this would come out, and it would be revealled that massive parts of the 9/11 Commission Report was based on falsehoods extracted by torture (thus bolstering the case made by those of us insisting on a new investigation)!

(To put things in context, please remember that the FBI's website does NOT list 9/11 amongst the things Osama bin Laden is wanted for and the FBI website discusses "PENTTBOM" which a tortured pseudo-acronym that means "Pentagon and Twin Tower Bombings". Why would the FBI use the word "bombing" in relation to destruction that was supposed to be due only to the impact of planes??? Is the FBI a closet 9/11 Truther???)

Anyway, I think the DOJ can do both. Investigate/prosecute torture AND have fair trials for KSM, Zubaydah and others.

I say, "bring it on"!

3. Full and Fair investigations will "tarnish the brand" for 2010 and 2012.
If the MSM begins reporting these acts of torture as "War Crimes", "UnConstitutional" and "Illegal (under both domestic and international law)", those who colluded with BushCo* and denounced any dissent will be exposed as the UnAmerican, treasonous bastards they are. If/when this does go to trial, the MSM won't stand a chance of spinning it favorably. The best they could do is ignore it, but it'll be all over the 'net anyway and that noise will drown out the MSM spinmeisters.

Remember, Kkkarls "math" was supposed to deliver a Republican Dynasty for the next millennium. The (R)s went along 'cause they thought they'd have cover long after leaving this earth. How many saw the writing on the wall and retired to "spend more time with their families" the second the possible outcomes for 2008 came down to Hillary/Obama or Gramps and the Hillbilly from Wasilla (or any of the other totally unqualified, uncharismatic (R) turds they ran)?

On a happy note, they (R)-corporate party is going to have a lot less time to fight or filibuster health care if they're busy trying to block investigations from every possible angle.
