The public option debate will determine if Obama is willing to
compromise with Democrats as much as he is willing to compromise with Republicans that never return the favor.

1. How?
As you pointed out how can you compromise with the Repubicans when they think changing their positions is a sign of weakness. When you try to compromise with a conservative it is all one sided they expect you to move in their direction as the compromise. That fits in with their definition of bipartisan which is 'if all the Democrats would vote like the Republicans in Congress then we could pass this Republican written bill with a bipartisan vote'.

2. Easy. A plan without a public option would benefit the health insurers
who are against any encroachment to their monopolistic hold. It will not solve our problem in the long run. The insurance industry buys their votes in Congress and have spent much money promoting the lies that kills debate and produced the lunatics that show up at town halls about a "government" takeover. The leadership, whether for money or "bipartisanship", compromises to these dishonest players. The leadership, seldom if ever that I'm aware of, compromises with the Progressive Caucus and the millions of voters they represent. If you can give some examples, please post them.
