I met the mythical Hillary/Sarah voter yesterday. She exists.
She's a checker at the supermarket, part of a large chain.

She pointed to the picture of Palin on Star magazine and said how much she liked her. I said I don't. She said, well at least she was better than the one we have now. I said you think she's better than Biden? That took her aback because she obviously had Obama in mind. Then she told me she'd been a lifelong Democrat but she just couldn't stand Obama.

Fortunately, there was no one else in line. I didn't argue with her, just said that at least the Obama and Democrats were trying to do something about health care, and that the Republicans were all opposing it. I said that was a huge issue for my family. She had no idea that people could be denied health care coverage for preexisting conditions, or that small employers could face enormous surcharges if one of their employees develops a serious condition, or that people could be dropped from coverage after they got sick. I told her that one of my children would be uninsurable once she got out of school. She was horrified.

At the end, she warmly wished me good luck with my children. Maybe she still hates Obama, who knows. But for a few moments yesterday, she was actually listening -- and she understood why I am convinced the Democrats, and not the Republicans, are on the right track.

1. Another problem is Objectivist-phase.
I know a nice young man who has recently started attending law school. So he's about 23 or 24. He's affable and belongs to a troupe that performs for the elderly. He's also going through his Ayn Rand phase (a bit late but that would be in character for his development) and was all about Ron Paul during the election.

My niece is "in love (not really)" with some 19 year old who is also going through his Objectivist phase. You have to give Rand credit for one thing- she identified a group, a mindset, that needed affirmation and was willing to pay for it.

2. my sister in law is a dem (she says so anyway) but didn't vote in the last
election and doesn't like obama. gee, i wonder why. I don't want to assume it's because he's black, but what other reason could there be?? I don't really think she's a dem... maybe a more liberal conservative, but i don't think she's a dem. i don't think she wants health care reform either. i tend to avoid talking about a lot of things with my family because a lot of them are.... let's just say..... ill informed. and they are not interested in getting the correct info.

3. Those are the "personality" voters; easily won over by (perceived) charm, looks & speaking voice-
Most of us know some voters who are like this (at least I do)- they don't know the first damn thing about politics or that "Republican/Democrat stuff", or what the Electoral College or the Senate or House of Representatives is all about. Think of the geniuses featured in the "Jaywalking" segments previously on the Tonight show.

to engage her respectfully instead of yelling and cursing her like some other DUers have bragged of doing lately. That sort of thing just serves to harden people's positions. Good on you! :toast:

6. I wish those kind of issues were on TV. All we hear is 'socialism' and 'fascism'.
It's no wonder so many people are against Obama and the health plan.

Nearly all the noise out there is negative.

The positive points are kept a tight secret among the few that actually
care to look at these things.

Until the media starts informing instead of inflaming, it's going to be
hard to change things.

...your new acquaintance can be forgiven for forgetting that Palin wasn't exactly running against Obama.

11. "lifelong Democrat but she just couldn't stand Obama."
Why do I think that is such a colossally bullshit statement? It's one thing to be a repuke and not like Obama, but to be a Democrat and claim that you didn't vote for Obama because she didn't like him, is massively disingenuous.

I really hate it when that canard is thrown out by people who feel some sort of misplace sense of moral superiority when their back up plan was sarah palin.

It's like someone saying, "well, I was for oxygen but I didn't care for it's combination with nitrogen so now all I breath is chlorine".

So mush blatant stupidity.

14. I met a couple like that during the election.
Knocked on a couple doors that had signs in their yard for Democrats but not Obama. One seemingly nice man said he was going to vote Democrat (sic) but "not for that guy" (Obama).

The stupid is pretty strong in some people.

19. I think that many were misled by McCain so-called moderate
stand and while they were not going to vote for a rabid Republican, like Cheney, they thought that McCain was not going to be that bad, at least a known commodity.

Of course, once he lost, we've seen the real McCain in his whole ugliness.

13. NOT mythical, SHE exists
My neighbor (across the street) is one. A highly educated, Israeli-born, life-long Democrat. She had Hillary stickers all over her car during the primary. We always had spirited, intelligent conversation.
When Obama got the nomination, she flew into PANIC mode. She "researched" Obama and became convinced he would, if elected, destroy Israel. :tinfoilhat:

I believe that nearly all Palin supporters are one-issue voters (anti-choice) and predominately Evangelical. Not this lady.

When I put up my Obama/Biden sign, she put up a McCain/Palin sign and faced it directly AT my sign (looked like the two signs were screaming at each other). I actually found it amusing - a civil way for neighbors to disagree.

Yes, they DO exist - and not all of them are uneducated hicks. Thus, I am forever viligant re all things Palin.

17. Interestinly enough the woman at the check-out-counter I went to recently had a similar tale.
I asked her how she was doing and she said,

"In an hour, I'll be doing much better. I can go home. Take the blue pill. Get all comfy in my white painted room in my white overcoat." Sometimes they're not all there, and I'm fine with that.

24. Yeah,
It has to do with what a spineless cowardly worm Obama is. This Democrat feels the same way she does, except I understand that the reason the health care crisis won't be solved is because of Obama himself, and his waffling on all that is important in health care reform, not to mention every other issue he's gotten involved with.

Obama has flip-flopped and sold out on everything he promised in his campaign.

And you're right, none of Obama's shortcomings are very "pretty."

25. i recently had someone tell me that if you're over FIFTY you won't get any medicine
if this "health care" bill passes.

read the bill and then read in between the lines -- what i was told

i laughed. "where are you getting this from? it's not true."

"yes it is," i was assured.

"of course it's not. why would politicians want to kill off the people who vote for them?"

"i don't know"

of course you don't know--

ugh.

food outlet...it should be company policy to not, even potentially, disrupt the shopping experience of customers that may in no way share the views of some checker somewhere least of all how they feel about Sara Palin. Be thankful I suppose she didn't probe you as to religion, oy!

Either way I've never had a checker pull a stunt like that though if they did I'd consider going to corporate with a suggestion. On top of which she may be union, people that perform in such ways are able to effect their own pension and retirement for what amounted to a flip opinion of Glenn Beck's
