My hairdresser this morning told me that she was "resigned to a government takeover of healthcare."
This is a person who votes the way the preacher tells her too. She had cancer at the same time I did and was lucky that her husband was able to keep their insurance when his company forced early retirement. Now she has Medicare, which is fine with her, but she is upset because she heard it will go bankrupt in 2 years and that's just the breaks because now she's finally eligible for it. And she's bought all the garbage about how the taxpayer will be paying for illegal aliens under any reform.

I spent what little time I had to spare explaining that rationing occurs now and more people are cut to maintain the profitability of insurance companies that receive services. She knows that. I also pointed out that if something doesn't happen and Medicare would disappear, it is likely that neither she or I would ever have any coverage if something happens to our husbands because of the type of preexisting conditions we have. She said she stays away from doctors now because she doesn't want to get caught owing anyone anything. So, I pointed out, she has begun rationing her own care.

I told her that if nothing is done, there will be neither coverage nor affordable care in the future for either one of us.

She nods, but says she still doesn't like it that the government will be taking over health care.

Maybe we're making headway in a perverse sort of way.

2. How does that indicate headway is being made?

3. Resignation is a step forward for this woman.
You would have to know her. Not liking it but a willingness to with a public policy is definitely headway with her.

Deep down inside, these people know that something needs to change. Except for those birther types and gun nuts.

4. Next time maybe you can work on the government 'takeover' myth.
It's exasperating. People love their Medicare yet can't seem to get it through their heads that IT IS A GOVERNMENT PROGRAM. Next time ask her is she afraid that the government will take over Medicare, and see what she says.

10. She knows that Medicare is a government program AND you could
tell that she was well aware that its administrative costs were more than 20% less than that of insurance. I pointed out to her that when she's paying a private insurer now, there is a good chance that they will ration her wellbeing to bolster the corporations earnings or to line an executive's pocket. She nodded.

People have been told that the market is only free when government has no say, when it is unregulated. People do not understand the extent to which corporations control the government and have their thumbs on the scale.

5. the stupid is hard to overcome.
One problem is that most of the people who automatically follow the FUX etc. line is they have NO background or history of the health care issue. So they take the voice on the radio or TV to be accurate. Because for some reason most people believe that if it is on TV or radio IT IS TRUE!

Ignorant or not, deep inside she knows it's going to happen and that it's not worth fighting as it's probably for the best.

I'll take.

In a few years, people like here will wonder how they lived before the "takeover".

7. Maybe the framing should be 'I don't like that the goverment HAS TO
take over health care, either.'

Just as the auto company CEOs ran their companies into the ground and had to be taken over by the government to keep them viable, and just as the financial industries that went belly-up because of their own irresponsibility and the governmnet had to bail them out to keep the entire financial sector from imploding, it is the irresponsibility of the health insurance industry - NOT the doctors and hospitals - that makes it necessary for the government to intervene and HAVE TO provide the services that the private sector has proved it CANNOT handle.

12. Sure, yeah...let's all behave in the same
way the RW would do. We rail about the masquerading of these conservatives as "compassionate." Why should I treat her with less understanding and compassion than I would a fellow Dem in the same circumstances in life? Sorry, Lynne, I can't go with you there.

9. Likes her Medicare, doesn't want goverment taking over healthcare
:banghead:

I am getting a little recording device and will play people's words back to them without comment. Then I will snap pictures of their faces.

I know, some still won't get it, but I am tired of doing what amounts to arguing with a drunk. It's pointless.

11. The government is the only entity that could ever control banks or insurance companies.
The government is We the People. And I don't think the government does ENOUGH!

The Wall Street/NY banks and the insurance industry are no less than organized crime. Only the government can bust it. The insurance industry is a monopoly that's exempt from anti-trust laws. Let's change that. Only the government -- we the people -- can do it.

13. The government bashing is so bizarre.
It can be counted on to run the military and lots of other things but not for meeting the essential needs of people. So many brainwashed people.

15. Good news for your hairdresser! The Gov isn't taking over
Health Care. And, there's a new White House website that tells the facts and shoots down the lies from the druggy hateradio zombie.

"SETTING THE RECORD STRAIGHT"

http://my.barackobama.com/page/content/settingtherecord

Cha --

It feels like a new lie about health insurance reform crops up each day. Government taking over all health care? Not true. Euthanasia for seniors? Couldn't be more false. Rationing of care? Reform will stop rationing, not increase it.

These lies create fear and anger, and we're seeing the results around the country. Frightened crowds have flooded town halls, and the office of a Georgia representative was defaced with a swastika.

It's time to set the record straight -- and, more importantly, expose the special interests and partisan attack organizations behind the lies and misinformation.

That's why we created our new "Setting the Record Straight" site. Check out the site today and then spread the word to your friends.

As the site makes clear, these lies are no accident. They're part of a deliberate plot by the special interests who profit from the status quo to kill any reform at all. While Americans watch their paychecks dwindle, their coverage disappear, and their businesses struggle, special interests are trying to scare folks into opposing reform.

Our "Setting the Record Straight" site has all the info you need to fight back, as well as easy ways to get involved in the fight for health insurance reform. We'll be updating it often with new information debunking health care lies, so stop by regularly.

As we learned during the campaign, lies like these can spread like wildfire through viral emails and from friend to friend. The best way to stop them is to arm yourself with the facts -- and make sure your friends and family know the truth.

Check out the site, and share it with everyone you know:

Mitch
