Pastor says Minneapolis tornado serves as warning against approving sin

MINNEAPOLIS - A blog post by John Piper, a Minneapolis pastor, called Wednesday's tornado in Minneapolis "a gentle but firm warning to the ELCA and all of us: Turn from the approval of sin. Turn from the promotion of behaviors that lead to destruction. Reaffirm the great Lutheran heritage of allegiance to the truth and authority of Scripture. Turn back from distorting the grace of God into sensuality."

The post references the human sexuality social statement that the Churchwide Assembly of the Evangelical Church in America considered Wednesday, and states that "The issue is whether practicing homosexuality is a behavior that should disqualify a person from the pastoral ministry." The sexuality statement does address same-gender relationships, but Piper may have confused the social statement, which was voted on yesterday, with the ministry recommendations, which addresses the issue of non-celibate gays and the ministry and will likely be up for vote tomorrow. Some have, however, seen the social statement as being soft on the issue of homosexuality.

Piper is the pastor for preaching at Bethlehem Baptist Church. The blog appeared on the desiringGod Web site, which features resources from Piper's ministry. VirtueOnline, an orthodox Anglican Web site, also posted the blog.

Afternoon storming that may have produced a tornado yesterday, damaged the roof of the Minneapolis Convention Center where the ELCA is holding its Churchwide Assembly through Sunday.

1. Yes, but grocery store circulars also got dropped off in Minneapolis mailboxes Wednesday.

Perhaps God just hates the low, low prices?

I think it's a tossup here, Pastor Piper. (By the way the circular advertised a great deal on pickled peppers.)

2. Methinks...
...the tornado sent his little gay-obsessed brain spiraling around inside this otherwise-hollow cranium and it has yet to come to rest.

3. Or, perhaps God was warning those who are prejudicial against GBLT
and is giving them warning that their bigotry will no longer be tolerated.

5. Lord, what an asswipe...If any state "deserves" the wrath of God...
according to him...

it would be Massachusetts.

You know...home of Gay Marriage rights.

But we don't seem to get a lot of natural disasters here, let alone tons of Tornadoes from God.

So what's up with that? Does God not know Massachusetts exists? Maybe we're just too small for him to bother with, huh?

6. The blog post is worth a link

No word as to why God is mad at the Minneapolis Convention Center, or why He smote the shit out of its roof.

10. Aren't the Lutherans
meeting there this week? They just agreed to disagree about homosexuality, and were, I think, planning to discuss allowing gay/lesbian clergy.

14. Yeah, there're in there
But the church is across the street. He could've just whaled on that and spared the innocent MCC. Or induced an episode of mass diarrhea.

Cripes, this Angry God nonsense is making me as loopy as the pastor. Don't mind me :D

11. were any gay bars damaged?
I thought not. It's not god that's sending the tornados. It's us devil worshippin' gays. THAT's the real reason for the tornadoes. God could care less. If he did give a toot he'd fuck up the gay bars, but do you see that happening? Nope. The ONLY possible reason is because teH gays are a bunch of devil worshippin' puppy sacrificin' immoral hair dressin' nancy boys. And girls. With magical tornado powers.

15. well, this ELCA pastor is telling that Baptist pastor
to kindly butt out of OUR business.

go home, open your Bible and read what Jesus said
about kindness, mercy and social justice.

What is it about those baptists who sure love to
tell others what to do, but can't see the forest for the trees.

Good grief....

18. Unbelievable the fruitcakes we have here.
And I'm talking about the Bible-thumping fruitcakes, not the gay fruitcakes!

Every time I get to thinking that people are getting more progressive, I read about a moron like John Piper...
