Some things you may not know about Democratic Underground...

1) On a typical busy weekday, we get about 1,000,000 page views and 150,000 unique visitors
2) Over the past month, we've had over 2,500,000 unique visitors to the site
3) A busy day will see about 20,000 new posts
4) We have 6 top-of-the-line dedicated servers running the site
5) During the heat of the primaries last year we were getting so much traffic that our ISP had to rewire part of their server farm to provide more power to our servers, which were tripping circuit breakers at peak hours

...my point is that DU is big, and while it is a challenging and full-time job to manage all of this and continually try to improve DU, we absolutely love it. Although we can't provide 100% uptime, 100% bug-free software, 100% user-friendliness, or make 100% of our members happy, we approach every upgrade, change, or decision with regards to DU with a perfectionist attitude. You should hear some of the conversations that go on...

Skinner: The text in that image doesn't look quite right, I don't think it's centered.
EarlG: Well, it's an equal number of pixels from each side of the image.
Skinner: Try shifting it one pixel to the left.
EarlG: Ok.
(silence for a moment while EarlG fiddles with it)
EarlG: How's that?
Skinner: Hmm, now it's too far left. What if you changed the font and moved it one pixel down?
EarlG: Ok.

...you get the idea. :) We take pride in the fact that DU is a well-designed site that is generally user-friendly and pleasant to look at, and we will continue to work to make the site better.

DU is a treasure in a world full of fool's gold.

I enjoy DU quite a bit now after 'lurking' for some time. I see some very heated debates but for the most part most arnt hostile.

I use it as a primary news source now ... I find its updated much faster than any other site and very much enjoy the discussions.

I love the hierarchical format!

I hate forums where the threads go to multiple pages & your posts are stuck at the end of the thread. It makes it very hard to respond to specific posts. Also, if you want to go back & read a specific post you have to remember what frickin' page it was on. The DU format is so much better!

I've been around for years, and it's gotten better and better as time goes on.

Seriously, the few times I've ventured to freepville I've been amazed at what a tangled mare's nest it was compared to this place.

Keep up the truly outstanding work. This place is no doubt a labor of love for y'all and we love ya right back.

I'm an old timer here despite a relatively low post count, and have donated twice a year for about 8 years now. In the beginning I wanted to support DU when it seemed the only place of sanity I could find after the election theft of 2000. Not sure I could have gotten through the BushCo years without this place. I've watched DU grow from a core group of under 100 regular posters in 2001 (maybe less, don't know) to the virtual metropolis it has become today, with thousands of 1000+ members it seems.

It's the place I get facts about what's happening politically and economically, and I very much appreciate the fine work you all have done and continue to do. Thank you. By the way, kudos to the Stock Market Watch daily thread in LBN - the best source of economic information there is. :cheers:

I love this site. I mean, I really love this site. I give monthly (I don't do that with any other site) and when my financial system is ok, I sponsor 5 people to get stars during each of the fund drives. I am incredibly blessed right now as I am a nurse, and even better, a unionized nurse so my job is safe. I decided to sponsor 10 people this time because I know that many of my fellow DUers aren't doing nearly as well.

I hope the other three DUers who feel secure in their jobs will follow suit.

That's very generous, and we appreciate our monthly subscribers giving a few bucks every month. It goes a long way. And those who sponsor other members during fund drives are the epitome of generosity!

Why should I donate? (Which I've never done... I've only received a star from well-meaning DUers to shut up my complaints.)

I've taken a $35,000 annual pay cut this year. I pay $9834.00 a year for health insurance for me and my daughter. My rent (yes, I rent in San Francisco where only 11% of the population who lives here can afford a mortgage) is $1974.00 a month... a shy less than $24,0000 a year. Between my rent and health insurance, I pay out nearly the medium household income in this US of A. But I would never plea for more money from strangers unless I could show a need.

So tell me Elad, how much of your appeal for donations is to maintain your lifestyle and how much is it to maintain this site?
Clearly, you will whore yourself out to any advertiser no matter how un-democratic. Where is the transparency?

any chance you can update your smilies? They are looking pretty old, there are so many better ones out there.

Have you considered allowing auto embed of You-Tube and a couple of other videos? It may seem like a small thing but to veiw videos with out having to click away from DU would actually be a welcome change. I have seen it on other message boards and it is a very nice feature.

I stumbled here during the primaries and have made it my virtual HOME online...I have met folks that are near & dear to my heart and that I would easily consider family...
and I have had my feelings hurt by people who have the sensitivity of a rock

But it is all part of political discourse...and I have learned so much and paid more attention as a citizen as a result.
