WTF? Right-wing propaganda movie showing at theatres
I went to our local theatre's website to check on some movies, and discovered a "special showing" on Saturday for a movie called "33 Minutes". The ticket price is $5, $2 less than for a regular movie. Here's the description:

33 Minutes: Protecting America in the New Missile Age is a one-hour documentary produced by The Heritage Foundation that tells the story of the very real threat foreign enemies pose to every one us. The truth is brutal - no matter where on Earth a missile is launched from it would take 33 Minutes or less to hit the U.S. target it was programmed to destroy. Nuclear proliferation around the world, and the threat of a ballistic missile attack of some kind is mounting as more and more countries obtain nuclear technology. The ongoing threat toward America is also accelerating due to the fact that there are many rogue nations and terrorist organizations who either have or are seeking ballistic missiles and nuclear technology. The challenges of protecting America and its citizens for President Obama's administration are great. Featuring rare footage and in-depth interviews with leading experts in the field, 33 Minutes is the definitive documentary exposing the untold vulnerability we all face and the action plan necessary to revive a strategic missile defense system that America uniquely can develop, maintain, and employ for its own defense and the peace-loving world's security.

My G-d, now they're subsidizing their propaganda at theatres! Why can't progressives do that with Michael Moore films???

To see what I mean: 33 Minutes at Wehrenberg Theatres in St. Louis

4. These are perhaps some of the dumbest motherfuckers ever to walk the earth
How the fuck is Raygun's dream of Star Wars going to stop a small boat with a nuclear device from sailing up the Hudson and incinerating the heart of NYC?

These assclowns pretend as if a missile is the sole means by which a despotic government would ever have to deliver a nuclear explosion on US soil, and for any despotic government with at least 3 synapses actively firing, that wouldn't even make the top 5 list.

28. Likely terrorist delivery methods for delivering a nuclear device would be
(a) assembly within the US from components either smuggled in or obtained within the U.S. and delivered literally as a car bomb. (The most likely user of a terrorist-built device, by the way, would be a domestic terrorist, for this reason.)

(b) on a ship bound for an American port. Even setting it off outside our 12-mile territorial waters would do damage from blast, heat, and radioactive steam fallout. If you could somehow sneak it up the Chesapeake or toward Manhattan, it would be devastating.

(c) an airplane, a-la 9/11. Least likely, but if it could be pulled off, the deadliest. (Air bursts do the most damage, including EMP.)

Missiles are extremely unlikely, even impossible, as terrorist delivery devices.

36. Star Wars is not intended to stop nuclear devices.
It main purpose is to funnel vast amounts of taxpayer money to profiteering corporations.

5. Threats to American safety are real.......
regardless if you want to believe it or not. That has been proven numerous times throughout history. Those that wish to do us harm are actively seeking nuclear material to use against us. At this time, I believe we are to strong for a flat out conventional war, on American soil, with missiles and troops from another nation. The biggest threat are from terrorists that wish to make a dirty bomb and set it off in an American city. That does not mean we should not plan for the future though. China and Russia are becoming more and more aggressive everyday. One day, they could decide to team up and fight a war with us. A missile defense system would be very useful in that situation and I believe is much needed. Plus, think of all the jobs it will create, with benefits no less. Then there would be no need for a government run option, that will no doubt turn into a disaster, just like in every other country that has tried it.

Quick now open another tab and google dirty bomb.

One day I might win the lotto and spontaneously turn into a woman; but I'm not holding my breath. If China and Russia decided to team up on us; no missile defense system would stop the number of missiles they could launch our way.

Spent six years living in Europe and this imaginary collapsing health care system you think they have is naught but a fairy tale.

Do you ever check your sources? At all?

A recent poll showed that 82% of Canadians had a favorable view of their Health Care system. Polls in other countries with some form of government run system show similar results. Do you really think Canadians are dying in droves due to problems such as you suggest and yet somehow still like their system? The stories you hear are propaganda, bought and paid for by various corporate entities here in the United States who are currently making a profit through denying you health care, or at least squeezing every last dime from your pocket to get it.

27. I had to use the VA as my source of medical coverage
Edited on Thu Aug-20-09 04:52 PM by MattBaggins
during my college years. Six week wait to get my gallbladder removed.

Had a heart attack in February and waited nearly six weeks to be able to start cardio rehab. Since the incident I have seen the actual cardiologist once for my one month follow up. I have only been seen twice by the office once with him and once with his NP. I called them for over a week trying to get some info from them for disability and finally on a Friday when I refused to get off the phone did they have the Doctor talk to me. Needless to say I was on the top of the list when work did some cutbacks and now I am unemployed and to try and get health coverage now would be a pipe dream having had a heart attack and diabetes.

Yeah our system is the world leader.

P.S to get an appointment in my city just to get my 6 year old daughters teeth cleaned is a nine month window. Last time we were in Germany visiting she had a bad tooth ache with some swelling. The local dentist told us to bring her in on a Saturday after hours and we paid out of pocket for a fraction of what I would have paid here.

38. A week's wait? Not if your insurance company decides they don't want to
Have been held up on all sorts of procedures waiting for "pre-authorization" while the insurance company dodges by saying they didn't get the required paperwork. I once faxed a form to them 14 times over a 2 month period and they mysteriously kept not getting it. They found it when I informed them I would be dropping by the office of my friend, the state insurance commissioner, with my 14 transmittal confirmation.

25. The best defense against massive nuclear attack
is mutual assured destruction.

If Russia or China attacked us, even if we DIDN'T fire back, the climate change from just a moderate bombing (100 cities) would make the planet uninhabitable. The fact that we WOULD fire back just underlines the problem.

Hell, even a nuclear exchange between India and Pakistan could cause massive famine by dropping the planet's temperature ten degrees for years and ripping a new ozone hole.

Missile defense does no good against terrorist-built-and-deployed devices. It's a boondoggle.

What's also too real is overselling and saddling up for contrived threats, so idjits like you can feel like chest thumpers (from the sidelines, of course), and politicos and profiteers can bleed us again. No fucking thanks, we've been through that too often, too long.

30. I'm 45 years old. From the moment I was born I was hammered with
"they are coming to get you". The Commies, The Ayatollah, The Chinese, Illegal Immigrants, Saddam, Kadafy, yeah yeah yeah, they all want to kill me. In those 45 years we have been attacked exactly once. I think my odds of being killed by a terrorist are still higher than say... being hit by lightning. Maybe you can go back to wherever it is you came from and ask your friends there if they can do something about all the lightning.

Maybe you and whoever you represent ought to think not about people wanting to attack us but why they want to attack us. You are never going to stop terrorism by killing all the terrorists. They are like weeds, kill one and two more take their place. You need to pull them out at the root.

People like you though are never big enough to admit that maybe some of our foreign policy's are causing this hatred of America. For you it's all about the "they hate our freedom" soundbite.

32. Tony Benn, former British Labour MP, said it best in an interview with MM:
"...I think there are two ways in which people are controlled - first of all frighten people and secondly demoralize them."

"An educated, healthy and confident nation is harder to govern."

39. "China and Russia...could decide to team up and fight a war with us"...
...and then we drop more nukes on them than they have combined, and they cease to be functioning nations. Hurray the war! Was it worth it?

Does this mean Conservatives have gotten soooo stupid they can't even remember the Cold War anymore?

It would at least explain your nonsense line about a public option.
