Email to everyone talking about healthcare: 'Frontline: Sick around the world'
An excellent piece about how countries all over the world have approached healthcare.

The interesting part? How Japan and Taiwan are facing the exact opposite problem we are (spiraling health care costs)

The really interesting part? How Taiwan faced the same perils we did in the 90s and fixed their system.

1. Taiwan's sounds most like H.R. 676.
From your link: "Taiwan's new health system extended insurance to the 40 percent of the population that lacked it while actually decreasing the growth of health care spending."

4. Taiwan studied every system in the world before putting theirs together.

They cherry-picked the best aspects of each plan with the foreknowledge they'd still have to tune it to their own needs over time. Guess it works. But that would NEVER work here. :sarcasm:

I don't recall where I saw the report, but it was incredibly informative and very well done.

On Edit:

Duh. Guess it was this show.

6. A couple important things to note -
Japan has mandatory insurance, BUT, 'insurers cannot turn down a patient for a pre-existing illness, nor are they allowed to make a profit.'f

Physicians in Germany earn between half and two-thirds as much as their U.S. counterparts, BUT, Germany Universities only cost 1000 Euro per year. Medical students don't graduate with a half million dollar debt.

7. If I recall correctly, NO developed nation allows profit on essential health care.
Except, of course, the US.

How many "exceptions" do we have to fall under before we are no longer considered a developed nation?

8. knr. yes, it's a great comparative healthcare program.
Taiwan understood the problems and actually is working to fix them! Unlike the US which is still obsessed with skimming profits off of peoples' illnesses.
