NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- A prison guard is accused of attacking a convicted child rapist, who was recently sentenced to 137 years behind bars.

Jeremy Duffer was assaulted at the Charles Bass Correctional Complex -- an intake center for newly sentenced inmates, said Dorinda Carter, a spokeswoman for the Department of Correction on Wednesday.

"Our internal affairs section received information yesterday afternoon that there had been an assault. We decided to pursue criminal charges against one of our officers," Carter said.

Corrections officer Joshua Barber was charged with aggravated assault and official misconduct.

The incident occurred early Tuesday afternoon and Barber was booked into the Davidson County Jail around 11 p.m. CDT.

Jail records show Barber was released on bond at 3:42 a.m. Wednesday.

Duffer did not require hospitalization, but was checked by medical personnel at the intake center and had some bruises, Carter said.

Prison Guard Who Attacked Rapist Not Guilty
Judge To Consider Guard's Termination Appeal

NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- A jury has decided that a former Metro prison guard accused of attacking a convicted child rapist is innocent.

Joshua Barber, a guard at the Charles Bass Correctional Facility at the time, was facing charges for assaulting Jeremy Duffer.

After his indictment, Barber was suspended without pay and then fired.

Now that he's been found not guilty, a judge will look into the appeal of that termination to see if Barber should get his job back.

1. utter rubbish
no matter how many times i see this in the media, it never ceases to amaze me.

"NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- A jury has decided that a former Metro prison guard accused of attacking a convicted child rapist is innocent"

no, they didn't. juries don't do this. they found him NOT GUILTY. he may very well be innocent as a lamb, but that was not the jury's determination.

this is one of my pet peeves. it is just blatantly factually wrong, and yet it's par for the course in modern journalism.

2. Wonder if Barber was just following protocol about handling unruly inmates

or if the jury felt that 137 years behind bars wasn't enough punishment for ruining the life of a child?

In an earlier day and age, that rapist wouldn't have lived to go to trial--the family of the victim, or the victim's whole town, would have lynched him.
