Poll question: Do you have health needs that are unmet right now?
Either because you lack health insurance or can't afford the copay/deductible.

1. Not really
but, I care about all those who suffer and die because they don't have coverage. And not to preport to be altrusitic I believe, 'but, for the Grace of God, go I.'

We must care about those who aren't as fortunate as some of us have been. It a question of the moral thing to do. End of sermon ;)

3. Maybe. I'm too scared to use my insurance in case I lose my job and get hammered
Edited on Fri Aug-21-09 09:52 AM by Morning Dew
with a pre-existing condition the next time I get insurance.

I won't even go for a check up.

Actually, I'm pretty healthy but that's just anecdotal so you can't trust it. :P

4. Then its really only useful to you if you have something
catastrophic happen where you have to use it. That's not the way it should be.

8. Exactly. I went "naked" for several years
on this job because, at the wages I was making, I simply couldn't afford the insurance. Finally, after a few raises, I figured I had better get signed on in case of catastrophe.

Playing those kinds of odds is something I'm sure many, many people are "forced" into with our current system.

It's wrong and it's hurting a lot of people.

We all deserve health care that won't bankrupt us.

6. Yes, dental work and checkups
I'm relatively healthy right now, but I really need dental work, cleaning, x-rays and fillings checked. I also need antibiotics before I can see the dentist. So I need a script for that.

I need doctors visits, regular checkups and a visit to the cardiologist. None of which I can afford.

This is the third time I've been laid off since 2004.

I'm really tired of it all to tell you the truth. I'm just not enthusiastic about jobs or paychecks or anything. If I could totally drop out of society, I would.

14. Yes, I haven't had a checkup for five years
The last time I did, the doctor suggested the routine tests that are recommended for my age. I priced them around town, and just one of them (colonoscopy) cost more than my monthly rent.

15. Not right now, but there was a time I had health insurane but no maternity coverage
why? Because I couldn't get an individual family coverage plan. Why not? Because my husband has a pre-existing condition, which is maintained by a prescription costing less than $75 per month. So, if I had become pregnant during the times we did not have employer-sponsored group coverage, I guess I would have been covered by some form of public option.

16. I'm terrified to go to the doctor for a physical for fear something will go on my record.
I've been denied health insurance once (though I finally did get insurance) ... I don't want my insurance taken away, or fail to get a job, or fail to get new insurance down the road (since mine is becoming prohibitively expensive) because I have a bad cholesterol report on my record or something.

Jeebus. This health care system sucks. Maybe someone should do something about this. :eyes:

18. That's not right.
But I know of people who were forced to take a "company physical" and they didn't tell the doctor about chronic conditions. And the doctor didn't find out. Nobody every believes they have your best interests at heart.

I know a diabetic who goes to an ER for insulin.

17. no insurance.
No insurance since 2006, when BF got fired from his shitty job.

I got a six month checkup this week which I needed for my meds.

Got 12 scrips and it was over $1,000.00

:wtf:

I need to have 2 large neuromas removed from my feet, a kidney stone whacked and a gyno problem fixed that costs $2K for an office procedure.

20. yes, I have a very bad back
Edited on Fri Aug-21-09 05:22 PM by justabob
I started having spasms (more like seizures) around Thanksgiving last year and suffered for several weeks. I was able to see a chiropractor for a little while and the spasms subsided, but the pain doesn't go away. I need an MRI, and a doctor but that ain't happenin'. Tuesday I had another spasm at work, but have to soldier on because if I miss so much as one shift either I or the cats will not eat and all the rest of it. Thankfully, this time around the spasms were not so bad, and by today I can stand up straight. I work in a restaurant and it is not a great place to be since so much of want I do is "heavy lifting"... hauling ice, tea urns, racks of glassware etc, nevermind being on my feet for 5-6 hours or more at a time. If I could get another job I would, but there just aren't any that are any better. At least the cafe I work at is "easy" compared to most places. Sigh.

on edit.... no insurance and no money

I have an impacted molar that requires oral surgery and I have no coverage or $$ to pay for it. And the kicker is, before I got laid-off my cheap ass coverage from my last job wouldn't have covered it anyway - the boss opted out of oral surgeries in his plan.

22. Lost the cap on an old root canal about 6 months ago.
Dentist says to put another one on he has to put a post in the jawbone to the tune of thousands.

Ya sure, make it a double. ROFL

So I'm in a holding pattern. I don't want to have it pulled because I can't put a bridge in that spot and I don't want to have an empty void in my mouth. Who can hold out the longest: Congress or my rotting tooth? lol Meanwhile, every month we pay $1000 to Medical Mutual for the privilege of saying we're insured.

Crazy, crazy F'd up world.

I'm sure there are many people here who would love to sign up with a company that doesn't consider pre-existing conditions.

28. I don't because I have Medicare. But before I turned 65, not
only did my catastrophic insurance never pay for a doctor once because of a high deductible, but I was afraid to use it because I didn't want them to raise the premium or worse deny me coverage when the time came because of a preexisting condition. They really have a scam going and I think those execs making $100,000 an hour should be in prison for running a bunco operation.

If it were reformed to the way it should be, nobody would want to run it because they couldn't get rich off it.

30. I have good insurance but still can't afford the deductibles on some meds.
When they increased the dose on one of them, the insurance company said the copay would double because it was 2 pills of 2 different strengths required to make up the total dose.
