HAPPY BIRTHDAY, HAWAII!!! 50 years old today!
Edited on Fri Aug-21-09 09:59 AM by KansDem
August 21, 1959- President Eisenhower makes Hawaii Statehood official by signing the proclamation that welcomes Hawai‘i as the 50th state of the union. He also unveils the new fifty star flag.

:woohoo:

My place of birth (although it was a territory then) and the birth state of President Obama

How many other DUers were born in Hawaii?

11. Barry Goldwater was born in the Arizona territory
Of course he didn't win the presidency, but he was the Republican party candidate in 1964. You could run.

5. Slight correction - but an important distinction. Hawaii existed (was born) more than 50 years
ago.

It became a state in '59.

8. You're Right
The State of Hawaii was "born" in 1959.

14. I remember that day.
Funny what sticks in memory. I was in the back seat riding in the family car and one of my parents said that we have 50 states now. Hawaii was now a state. I wonder if the subject came up because we saw some flags flying or a sign or something? I was seven years old.
