Rich NYC Mayor: Drug CEOs Don't Make Much Money
(08-21) 09:03 PDT New York (AP) --

Mayor Michael Bloomberg is defending pharmaceutical companies and their CEOs, declaring that they "don't make a lot of money" and shouldn't be scapegoats in the health care debate.

The billionaire mayor made the comments on his radio show Friday.

Abbott Laboratories Inc. Chairman and Chief Executive Miles White's compensation was $25.3 million in 2008. Schering-Plough Corp. Chief Executive Fred Hassan's was $16.2 million.

The mayor is running for re-election and often battles criticism that he is out of touch with regular people.

3. God I wish we could get rid of that ass
He uses his money as a weapon. Everyone is afraid to run against him, he strong-armed the City Council into practically guaranteeing him a third term by voting down term limits (which the VOTERS had approved TWICE), he's no better than a dictator who appoints himself and bullies challengers out of the way.

6. I'm very ignorant of NY politics...why does NYC have a Republican Mayor anyway?

8. His $4,000,000,000.
Plus the Democrats here are inept, the machine is corrupt, and nobody compelling has stepped up to the plate.

9. NY party politics are weird
As much as I hate Bloomberg, I will admit he's a Republican in name only. He's a lifelong Democrat who changed his party affiliation to run for mayor. With the exception of the Giuliani administration, the Republican Party often functions as a "rent-a-party" for Democrats who don't want to "wait in line" for their turn to run for mayor. Koch ran as a Democrat, but toward his second (third?) election, he ran on both the Democratic and Republican lines.

11. Because he paid for the Mayoralty.
And he's buying a third term.

I swear I wish we could be rid of this piece of shit.

10. The real question is why is this billionaire so eager to say in power for $1 per year?
It's because he hasn't finished giving away billions of real estate to his developer friends. The one positive thing about the collapse of the real estate market is that it looks like the Atlantic Yards has collapsed. So Bloomberg "has to" stay in power until real estate recovers so he can finish the project of giving away the city's land to his friends.

7. Hey owns the press.
You want to know why he spends $50 million on a mayoral race when he's way ahead in the polls and nobody has a chance against him? Because that money buys you good coverage later. He owns a media company, he knows this better than anyone.

He's not a bad mayor per se (esp next to Ghouliani) but now that term limits are trashed we could have had a three-term Ghouiliai. I support term limits for chief executives but not for legislators.
