Olympia Snowe (R-ME) to Andrea Mitchell, just now on MSNBC........
the public option is off the table for the "Gang of Six" finance committee. Sorry, no link - she just concluded the interview.

1. I don't get it. The finance committee is more than six!
Enlarge the gang and let's get the public option!

2. I just emailed them all in favor of it. Damn. I wish I had done it sooner but
I am not sure if it would have mattered. I don't think they ever wanted it.

(Olympia, as my Senator I hope you are deeply ashamed. You know how much MaineCare has meant to the people of this state who had no other chance at healthcare!)

3. Screw that six pack of morons.
I'm so tired of hearing what WON'T be in the damn bill. I almost just want to bury myself underground until this mess gets some kind of meaningful write up.

5. If they say no, does that mean there won't be a public option? Can Obama send the bill back
and say, "I won't sign this until you put it back in there?"

9. Nancy Pelosi's done that
They can pass any garbage they want in the Senate. If it doesn't get through the House, it's dead.

(Must call Pelosi's office, even though she isn't my Rep)

10. I believe he can.
Edited on Fri Aug-21-09 12:18 PM by Curtland1015
As far as I know (and perhaps there's someone out there more politically knowledgeable than me who can say different...) the committee is just there to give it's recommendation. They have no real power to force the way the bill is shaped. I may be wrong on that...

it isn't - he is clear on that

he is a supporter - but that does not mean it is the only option he will accept

I fear you are correct.

All smoke and mirrors, a side show for the masses, while the true intent was about getting the Health Insurance Industry money into the pockets of the Democrats.

It's. always. about. the. money!

17. You are correct sir.................
This committee is a sham. Why are there equal numbers of Dems and Reps? That does NOT reflect the face of the Senate, and gives the Reps more power which they were not given in the last election. It seems curious to me that given the behavior of Reps of late (especially Sen. grASSley) that we can trust they'll be reasonable or bipartisan. My point was that some thought that Sen Snowe would have been reasonable and an ally. Party before people, I guess.

Always good to see you sir.

20. And You, Your Grace
We are in agreement over the make-up of this 'gang' as well. Baucus should be stripped of his chairmanship for this; the thing should be wrought by the entire committee.

6. No big surprise there
Did you hear Rachel and Kent Jones do their skit about Republicans and health care?

Rachel: Do you want pizza for lunch?
Kent: Yeah.
R: Pepperoni, sausage?
K: No, no.
R: Mushrooms?
K: No.
R: Bell pepper?
K: No.
R: But, you want pizza, right?
K: Oh, sure.
R: We could get ham.
K: No.
R: You just want cheese?
K: No. No cheese.
R: Sauce?
K: No sauce.

Did she say anything else interesting? She might hold the key vote on whatever we try to pass the Senate (assuming the gang of six fails).

She said she hoped that any solution would be a bipartisan one. The comment I noted came up in response to Pelosi's quote that the public option is essential.

28. Finance won't even report out a bill....they're broken.
Baucus, and Conrad, are like chess players with a losing position who are going to let the flag drop on their clocks and lose on time, rather than get beat over the board. The Senate GOP sent word out via Kyl that nothing is acceptable to their caucus -- no version, no compromise is enough to get GOP votes. And in the House, Pelosi's train is leaving the station already. They screwed the pooch, they know it, and this is the only semi-dignified exit.

HELP's version will be the Senate's lone contribution to conference, and whatever emerges, Snowe will vote for cloture, and against the bill. That's her usual straddle, and I don't think she'll change.

31. You're right..........
and Grassley and Enzi's hinting that they need a bill that would garner 70-80 votes is tipping their hand as well. These guys are not interested in HCR in any meaningful fashion and are willing to change the rules to get what they want.

the committees are going to have to be reconciled. That means that Baucus's committee doesn't have the last word yet.

Thrown in the metal wastebasket, soaked with gasoline and lit on fire.

32. That's my question as well - is there even ONE bill that contains anything that could actually be
considered a ROBUST, meaningful public option? Such crap as "10 million people in public option by 2019" is in NO fuckin' way a robust option, nor is it real "health care reform".

Been too busy too keep up with all the proposals out there.

IMO, lame-ass so-called "reform" is worse than nothing at all.

...in Uncle Henry's for her only campaign ad and still win 60-40. She gets a near-majority of Democratic votes.

Safest seat in the Senate -- safer than Ted Kennedy's.
