Too much gov't aid inflates college tuition costs
Pete Chagnon - OneNewsNow - 8/21/2009 7:20:00

According to an educational policy expert, a bill pending in Congress could balloon tuition costs in higher education.

Neal McClusky is the associate director of the Cato Institute's Center for Educational Freedom. He says the U.S. government already pumps billions of dollars into higher educational facilities and into student tuition aid. McClusky contends that as the government provides more aid money to students through programs such as the pending Student Aid and Fiscal Responsibility Act, higher educational institutes will continue to raise their tuition fees in order to take a larger slice of the government pie.

"It's not a surprise then that tuition costs have risen even faster than the cost of healthcare because the government keeps saying we're going to give you more and more money to pay, so students demand more and colleges can charge more and buy more stuff. And this Student Aid and Fiscal Responsibility Act is going to greatly increase the amount of money that students can get from the federal government, both in terms of loans and in terms of Pell Grants, which is going to make this primary problem in higher education -- which is rampant cost inflation -- even worse."

OneNewsNow asked McClusky if he had a better solution. He suggested that the federal government needs to stop funding student aid programs, which he believes will force colleges and universities to economize, cut tuition costs, and become more competitive and affordable.

1. To take a bigger slice of the pie! Did it never occur to him that when
more students attend a college or university that it must grow to accommodate their needs. It isn't a matter of getting tax money. It is a matter of educating more people.

2. I Actually Agree With Them
There's no good reason that tuition costs have increased at twice the inflation rate for the past 30 years. I don't see how costs at colleges could have risen that fast. I think that colleges charge more because folks can pay more.

(Sorry - even a stopped clock is right twice a day.)
