The back to school tax free weekend is going on here in Texas. Why

do they not require proof that the items purchased are for back to school? Why can I go purchase clothing without paying the sales tax for "back to school?"

I understand the state wants everyone to go give their money to people and it would probably be against the law to limit it to parents of school age kids but they could at least drop the back to school from the name and call it the "We want you to go give your money to people tax free shopping weekend."

1. I'm sure it will help struggling families with kids-I have no problems with this.
Me? I'm steering clear of ALL stores in TX this weekend.

2. I have no problem with them being helped or anyone getting the help from it

I just wish they would call it what it is, "The we want you to go give your money to people tax free weekend."

4. Here in NC it's just called tax-free weekend
though school supplies are the focus.

7. Sales Tax Holidays are a great way to boost short term spending.
Sure, the state and towns take a hit, but it does increase demand, which spurs economic activity.

The only problem is that they're only good for short term boosts.

8. this is true of course. but i dont think it is the intent. hubby went out last night to buy
we have gotten all school supplies but already it is hittin 40 bucks, for one child. i have two. we think about the people with more children, and on a more budgeted income and makes it a little easier for us to buy all the supplies on the list without complaint knowing there will be students not buying the supplies and using the pooled resources.

it is hard on people, what is demanded on them beginning of school year

and i really think this is more a consideration to them, than to boost sales for stores. they are already gonna get it.

10. There is a study that shows it doesn't even boost sales
It simply moves demand to that particular weekend.

9. The enforcement would cost far more than the collection
How exactly would you prove that pack of pens is going to be used at school, as opposed to be used by Dad at work?

I suppose you could bring in a registration form and have stores verify it...but then would be so easy to forge, not to mention it doesn't prove its going to be used at school.

Perhaps take a photo at school wearing each of the items of clothing? File a form, send it and receive a tax credit on your state return?

For all practical purposes, an honor system is the only feasable system here.

My god, how do you deal with the RAGE?
Maybe you could go beat up some Girl Scouts or kick some puppies or something to get your "Scrooge" on.

It's a 'Sales Tax Holiday'. Learn to cope.

12. Yeah, I don't really care
My biggest problem is that I need to buy a new pair of pumps to wear on Monday and I have to fight the crowd this weekend at a store to get them. I wish I had remembered to buy them during the week. x(
