I just bought copies of a book that has me as an author
Strange feeling. I guess I could have had the publishing company send me a free copy, but I bought one for a friend and for myself.

It's a textbook for research scientists about cystic fibrosis and I wrote one of the chapters. It took me about two weeks to write it, which is a record time for me. My first paper took me two years to write and even then I wouldn't send it out for publication. My second only took me a year, and I did send it for publication, although I don't like it, now.

It's going to be strange, getting a book with my name in it as an author. But it feels really good. Especially so, since I am a self-taught scientist.

6. here ya go
quotes from the steve martin movie "the jerk"

Navin R. Johnson: The new phone book's here! The new phone book's here!
Harry Hartounian: Boy, I wish I could get that excited about nothing.
Navin R. Johnson: Nothing? Are you kidding? Page 73 - Johnson, Navin R.! I'm somebody now! Millions of people look at this book everyday! This is the kind of spontaneous publicity - your name in print - that makes people. I'm in print! Things are going to start happening to me now.

Sniper: Johnson, Navin R... sounds like a typical bastard.

14. Gene therapy is a no go in this disease.
It's a genetic disease, alright, but the problem with gene therapy is that the lungs are one of the main organs that meet with the dirty, nasty outside world, and thus, they have one hell of an immune system. You can't put a strange gene in these lungs. They've tried vector after vector to carry the correct copy into the nucleic membrane. Not happening.

Maybe, now, though, with stem cells, they'll be able to make a breakthrough. That's taking a bit of a different approach, although it is still gene therapy.

15. I couldn't have done it any other way, but.....
being autodidactic, as you know, has it's drawbacks.
