It smells like doo doo in San Francisco
I left work (downtown) and thought maybe somebody's dog had gone in front of our building but this morning I see this in the paper:

http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/blogs/bottomline/detail?entry_id=46016&tsp=1

What's that smell?
Thought it was something on my shoe when I first detected on Mission Street, outside the Chronicle mid-afternoon. Malodorous, excremental.

It wafted through my car window, driving south on 280. Followed me up Chenery Street in Glen Park, then in Mollie Stone's parking lot at Twin Peaks.

Thought I was nuts, until my wife and kid said they had experienced the same thing in various parts of town.

KCBS reported the story, saying odor mainly in the Richmond and Sunset. Uh-uh.

Algae off Ocean Beach the source? Man made, linked to sewage?

All nasal witnesses, facts and theories welcome.

10. Last time I was in Moscone Center it smelled like pee pee
But that shouldn't surprise anybody since I spotted two guys pissing on buildings walking between the BART station on Market street and the center.

When you flushed that walking stick, you probably never considered that it would wind up in someone's lawn.

5. They just had a bout of killer stinky seaweed in France

Killer seaweed clears French beaches
Adam Sage | August 06, 2009
HOLIDAYMAKERS have been told to keep away from beaches in northern France covered in seaweed after doctors gave warning that it could give off lethal fumes when it rots.

A stretch of beach had to be closed after a horse rider lost consciousness as a result of the putrefying algae. His horse was killed. Local residents have also been treated in hospital.

Sometimes the area around my house smells like someone let off a gigantic room air freshener. It smells flora yet chemical at the same time. I guess that is preferable to dog doo smell.

13. To my nose, most cities of any size have a distinct, unpleasant odor
But then again, I live out in the country, so my nose isn't sensitized to the smells of urban life. But virtually any city I travel to I can generally smell miles away.

15. Live in the mid-west and the smell of cow shit and horse shit is a common thing. In fact
in the spring when they start opening barns to clean/air out from winter it gets pretty rank even for people who live around it. Then you have to deal with the stench of the mega farms that are popping up every where, I live up wind from one but occasionally the winds comes from the east and......:puke:

when my aunt came to visit we always had to take her to see the farms around here.

And you ask them, "Don't you get tired of the noise?" and they respond "Heck no, that's the sound of freedom." Fucking jackoffs. Same people have bumper stickers that say "I *HEART* Jet Noise". When I ever I see one of those I just shake my head and think, some stupid son-of-a-bitch has actually been tricked into supporting that shit. I mean does anybody actually seek out jet noise and decide that they really would prefer that in their lives? If they do they are one dumb mother-fucker.

the north (US mainland) and it is much dirtier and smells different.

haven't been to the mainland in a decade or more but when I did go I spent several days with a clogged up nose, headache and sneezing.

long before you see it. It's too bad the oceans will soon smell like the land.
