Y'all seen this?? More about Sanford - another cover-up?
http://www.thedailybeast.com/blogs-and-stories/2009-06-25/sanfords-strange-side/

In March, a reporter for the American Conservative, Michael Dougherty, traveled to South Carolina to write a profile on Sanford. He returned with a generally favorable piece portraying the governor as a principled conservative with maverick tendencies. Buried in Dougherty’s lengthy profile, however, was a story from Sanford’s past that local papers suppressed and the national media has ignored to this day.

During Sanford’s first run for governor in 2002, an 8-year-old African-American girl drowned while wandering across Sanford’s vacation property on Lady’s Island. Sanford’s insurance company paid the girl’s family “around $300,000,” according to Dougherty, and the incident remained private.

Sources gave Dougherty varying account of the girl’s death: One said she fell into a “pit” while another said she drowned in a “retaining pond.” Other sources offered the reporter odd background details: “Sanford,” they told Dougherty, “who owned a hydraulic excavator at the time, digs holes on his property to unwind.”

1. Some folks clear brush
others dig holes.

At least clear brush serves some logical purpose. Just going around your propery with a hydraulic excavator digging holes seems pretty bizarre by any standards. weird.

2. You mean the media conspired to keep such an incident hidden from view?
I'm shocked - SHOCKED, I tell you - that the media would bury stories that could prove embarrassing for up-and-coming conservatroids (especially those with mega-rich wives).

Odd habit, and one that likely plays hob with environmentally-sensitive areas such as the barrier islands of South Carolina. I hope this self-indulgent practice has been curtailed!

Sanford's penchant for 'digging holes' finally caught up with him, and I hope he ends up buried in one of those holes of which he is so fond (metaphorically speaking, of course).

17. IIRC,
his father is buried in one of those holes.

Another interesting tidbit: AP is reporting that the Gov. has taken many private plane trips that he did not reveal as required by SC law. These are not the trips he took for personal business on state owned aircraft, but trips taken on privately owned planes. He's already under investigation for the trips he took on state planes.

Looks like the hole he's dug for himself is getting deeper and deeper. I wonder if he can see China yet!

11. Local news is full of impeachment talk. It's coming. And it won't be good for SC.
Edited on Sat Aug-22-09 10:51 AM by dem629
His successor (Andre Bauer) shares the same political views.

We're better off with Sanford in office, discredited and politically paralyzed. That's the only way to hold the line on their conservative agenda.

13. No problem. I'll tell you something very odd that's going on.
Edited on Sat Aug-22-09 11:05 AM by dem629
Local talk radio (conservative, of course) is pretty much in favor of impeaching him now. They were previously calling for him to resign.

Sanford is their hero. They've defended him to the wall on everything. But now, even in the absence of indictments or charges or anything even close to that, they (the conservatives) want him out.

Why?

So Andre Bauer can push the agenda further. They know Sanford is politically useless now.

Of course these radio hosts and callers are masking their true intentions, presenting their views as "principled," that since he cheated and left the state and all that, he's got to go. That is NOT why they want him gone. They want him gone so Andre Bauer can pick up the ball.

Most of my Democratic friends want Sanford to stay, just to hold the line on their agenda. I'm on the same page.

24. Actually Andre isn't another Sanford.
One of his prime supporters is Jake Knotts. Knotts would love to bury Sanford in one of those holes.

Sanford is a libertarian ideologue welded to dogma. Bauer is a lightweight good ol' boy who has trouble keeping 2 thoughts in his head. His biggest campaign was for the "I Believe" religious license plates. He hasn't even waited until becoming Governor to have a scandal or two.

Sanford's true heir apparent was Nikki Haley. She scared the hell out of the rest of the field before Sanford started hiking. He blew a hole in her campaign. That is a good thing, because Haley would be a truly scary person in power. She is intelligent, conservative, and attractive. Like Palin, but with a brain.

26. On the major issues facing this state, he most definitely is.
Edited on Sat Aug-22-09 09:14 PM by dem629
I see no difference between Sanford and Bauer when it comes to fiscal issues, and everything comes down to that at the state level.

But even more to the point: Bauer wants to be governor and he's a Republican. He'll do what the good ole boys tell him to do. These Republicans want Bauer in office for a reason. Don't let them fool you.

32. Bauer doesn't have the cojones on the state's fiscal issues that Sanford does.
Granted Sanford has turned out to be one strange character even for SC. However, he will not let up on a public policy such as taking the stimulus when he gets it in his mind. He is the same way about the Unemployment Commission. Sanford will keep poking at that until the end of time.

Sanford will not listen to anybody. period.

Bauer may have have a lot of the same fiscal positions, but he is a creature of the legislature as you pointed out. Sanford never was, and they fought like cats and dogs.

They don't fool me. One reason they don't want Bauer in is because they don't want to give him a headstart on the job in the coming election.

Another problem is that Senator Glenn MConnell doesn't want to give up his position as President of the Senate and become lt. governor. He would go from one of the most powerful state positions to one of the most powerless. He is working on some angle right now so that he won't have to move.

I have no idea what exactly is going on. I just know that a lot of things are. I also know that Sanford will not be impeached no matter what he does unless everybody in the back rooms can agree.

19. Not the way SLED is going. At least not to this point.
I think it's impeachment or maybe some kind of deal to walk away from office.

Then, of course, SC would just be worse off.

5. That's just bizarre.
Digging holes with a hydraulic excavator....who does that? And even if he gets some benefit from it, why wouldn't you fill them back in so they don't become a danger to people, or animals. Something just seems off about that to me.

10. If these trips were in 2008, I noticed something "funny"
when the mistress story broke.. Public records listed quite a bit of detail for 2007 travel, but 2008 records were pretty much non-existent, so one would assume that he went "nowhere" in 2008..but then we know he WAS traveling..just mooching off rich buddies & not telling anyone..what a scamp:rofl:"
