Robot cats and other man-made companions could help Britain's elderly, according to a report by the Royal Academy of Engineering. The report recommends that autonomous devices could provide a variety of different services to older people, ranging from basic companionship to medical monitoring. Devices with the appropriate sensors could act as fire detectors, or flash lights when doorbells or phones ring.

"This is not constrained by the technological possibility of it so much as by the desire to do it -- and that is bound up with all sorts of social factors," said Professor Will Stewart of Southampton University, who contributed to the report, speaking to Reuters.

"It is not a complete replacement for your kid calling you once a week. What you want is continuous attention and that is very difficult," said Stewart.

Maybe older Brits could start with the Dream Cat Venus, an autonomous robotic feline that is already available for about $110 in Japan.

3. Do robot cats attack invisible bugs on the wall?
Do they continue to run full speed under the coffee table when they are too tall to do so and crack their skulls on the wood leaving them dazed?

Do they get high on catnip?

Do they eat mice?

8. We have five of the little bastards
So we keep one of those feeders full of dry food all the time. One of the cats has taken it upon himself to lay on top of the bowl of dry food and not move so that none of the other cats can get to the food. IF this happens early in the morning one of the other four cats will jump on the bed and start kneading us until we get up and move him. One cat just walks up and down the hall hollering.

Never a dull moment with these cats. It's worth the daily hairball and the four litter boxes that have to be cleaned twice a day.

10. LOL. They are wonderful to have around.
We had one cat who could sit so still you wouldn't see her. If you start looking through the house, calling her name, no response. You could try the can opener, shake the dry food box, get out the treats. Nothing would work. Then you just might catch her out of the corner of your eye. She would be sitting on a shelf, watching you, and she wouldn't move until she knew you had finally seen her. It was a lot of laughs.

She would also find the highest point in the house when she had to throw up. LOL On the tv, top of shelves, one time she went upstairs and leaned over the rail. Oh, what a mess. LOL

15. we have several bowls strategically placed around the house
But they aren't self filling like the one that the alpha cat lays on. So as soon as the other cats eat whats in those bowls and want more (and with 5 cats that happens freqquently) the whining begins.

9. Not high maintenance?
It takes an effort to keep my lady's cat out of our bedroom (I said I wouldn't move in unless she could guarantee me a cat-free sleeping zone), and don't even get me started on the litter box.

Nice thing about RoboKitty, he doesn't need to be 'fixed'. That should keep down the "crazy cat lady" numbers.
