The devil made me do it
Instead of running the mutt with bicycle yesterday, I found myself directing traffic when an over-sized semi with a 130foot long I-beam tried to change direction, but ended up in both ditches instead. The rig was jackknifed with the trailer squashing the left rear cab axles as the right front was mired up to the belly pan. This was about the most effective traffic barrier I have ever seen.

One of the truckers stuck in the line told me the closest wrecker with the muscle to move the beast was a good hour and a half away. So being the nice guy I am, I started giving out instructions as to how to detour the mess without having to travel more than a mile off the beaten coarse using a couple dirt roads that wouldn't be on many maps.

That all changed with the white Lexus sporting the McSame/Sarah Baraquiter bumper sticker. Old guy (my age) behind the wheel, and a female companion closer to my daughter's age in the right seat. (they didn't look to be related however) I was just going to ignore the puke, and let him sit there, but he HAD to call me over. At least he had the decency to turn down the volume of old Limpballs on his radio. He whips out a laptop with a nav program on the screen, that had every public road in the State listed.

Around here, public road doesn't necessarily mean passable.

He has a route mapped out that is familiar to self, and would get him and his female companion to where they wanted to get. I use the route as a shortcut quite often, and I informed him of such. A quick k-turn and the Lexus with its annoying bumper sticker is tooling toward the "alternate" route. I couldn't fail to notice how little clearance a Lexus has.

I smiled..I even think my mutt understood the situation and gave an approving wag of his tail.

What I failed to mention (somehow I forgot) is that when I travel that road, I drive a full sized 4X4 and just barely clear at a couple washouts. I also think I forgot to mention that there is no way to turn around for about a half mile if the gully looks too intimidating or that cell phones and OnStar are useless.

They lovely couple didn't look like the types that would travel with bug-dope. What a shame.

My question is....Will St. Pete remind me of this at some point in my future?

1. You'll have a hot tub in your suite in Heaven.
You have to love opportunities like that.

2. I think Ol' Pete would be pleased
After all, you provided a wonderful opportunity for this obviously self-reliant individual to pass along his 'pull oneself up by one's bootstraps' philosophy along to a younger generation.

3. Nah, you gave him directions, thats all.
Nothing says it HAS to be the best way to get from A to B. Had you sent him in the wrong direction with no hope of getting to his destination, maybe.

I think you are ok.

7. That's not devilish, just an oversight with unexpected benefits.
One day a couple of summers ago on a trip to the beach, saw Mr. gold watch, designer shades and trendy wardrobe looking between the tire iron in his hands and the flat tire on his convertible classic corvette like a new Dad would a baby and a diaper. Was hard not to enjoy a moment where the larger than life have to cope on their own like the rest of us do.
