Just when all hope was lost....
I'm recovering from a surgery my insurance didn't pay for (their deductible was so high it was not worth it) and all of the news is horrible...and I'm mad at Obama's poll numbers dropping right when we need him to be supported the most....I'm missing my family who are far away....

and a fellow DUer, whom I've NEVER met, finds out I'm missing Trader Joes treats and sends me the nicest care package I've ever gotten.

I'm blown away.

I know this probably doesn't belong here, but fuck it. Sometimes it's important to remember how big we are. How much good we can do. How generous our members are. I was thinking of giving up today. But now I'm going to take my chocolate covered pretzels and my yummy chicken noodle soup and I"m getting back in the game.

SO, to my DU angels (there are two of them!), unapatriciated and lame54, thank you!!!

Thank you from the bottom of my heart.

We can do this thing, people. Because we have people like my two DU angles on our side. This is who we are! We're doing this for everyone. For those who are in so much worse shape than I, and have no voice. We're doing it for families who are losing their homes so they can pay for their chemotherapy. We're doing it because it's the right thing to do.

All I want now (as if I haven't been given enough today) is for everyone who gives a shit to show what we're made of. Sign up to be a part of the solution.

Funny how when we're starting on the way up from being down--seems like that's when we're at our best to help others; and then that re-energizes us ourselves too. And spirals upwards from there.

Haa, did that even make sense?? :D

"I've always depended on the kindness of strangers..." Ok, it was fitting and I couldn't resist 'cuz of your name and you probably get that all of the time (ducks).

Love the hugs and chocolate:-) Right back at u!

Glad you found the link. You know, we were so damned organized for the election. If we do half of that for healthcare, we could be successful:-) It's hard to believe we won the election...there are still days that I wake up wondering if it was all a dream.

Sure, we're a motley crew - but we get it together when we need to. And then we discover just how much power we have united.

22. Must be something in the air today...
this from today's email exchange with a friend discouraged by the crudity of behavior at two town hall meetings this week:

"Just spent a couple of hours with some people who are the polar opposite of what we've been subjected to of late. One of the guys in my small biz networking group (we're all clients of voc-rehab) had an open house to launch his business. The event was a fun and very poignant reminder of the power of "Yes We Can". As discouraging as the last couple of days have been, I've decided to reclaim that mantra. I'm choosing to not let 'them' take it away from me.

I've been toying with the idea of promoting positive progress, informally, somewhat spontaneous; three or four people meeting to talk about the positives that are happening and using those to brighten whatever corner I find myself in. Might be hokey, but I'm tired of letting the loudmouthed naysayers carry the day. It takes an exceptional selfishness to think and act the way they do, and I'm all for beating feet in the opposite direction.

I say "screw fear!", it divides us and brings out the worst in us. And if I'm going to get rid of the anger and the fear behind it I need to replace it with something better. So, I might call sometime and let you know that I need some positive progress talk (hmmm, do I really want to be known as a PPer? -- heck, who cares, it's worth the grins!)."

Wishing you a speedy recovery. Hold tight to those angels' hands, that's what they're there for!

27. oh, wow-- that's so moving
and so true. Yes, many people scoff and say it's hokey, but you know what? It's powerful and it DOES work. We are what we think...and feel. And we do change things with our outlook.

I love your friend's idea, and I'll try to do it myself. I guess that idea of spending some time being grateful for the good every day is really true.

Obama's message of hope and empowerment was so moving because for years, we had no power. I remember when Bush invaded Iraq, how powerless and hopeless I felt. Well, now we have a guy who's trying. And he has US, on the ground, to make things happen.

Sure, things won't change overnight. But we have long term plans and we will stand strong until we see those wrongs righted.

Thanks for your great message:-) Hugs...

That feeling of bonding, of being cared for, is so relevant to our current healthcare debate.

How much healthier of a nation would we be if all of our citizens felt "cared for", instead of terrified that they might get sick?

And shame on your insurance company for not covering your medical needs! And shame on whoever it was who "unrecommended" your post (I just obliterated 'em!). And major kudos to your two DU angels. May they be blessed in the ways they deserve!

After watching "Critical Condition" on Bill Moyers Friday night, I am appalled that there is any sane person in this country who does not think we need health care for all. Guess "sane" is the operative word here!

And now I'm off to get that Glove of Pain closer to Rushbo's ugly mug!

May your healing be accelerated by knowing how much all of us care!

I'm sure some people find this post not relevant, etc. That's OK, I expected that. On the other hand, I think it's important to focus on the power of our attitudes, and our spirits, as we enter this huge fight over healthcare. We do need to be reminded of who we are and what we can and will accomplish.

42. thanks!
When I think about how this could and does impact families around our nation, it becomes abundantly clear to me why we need insurance reform as a part of healthcare reform.

I believe in our President and in our ability to community organize for healthcare. The media's spin on him is so patently transparent as to render them almost irrelevant. Each day they have a new fear mongering tactic to gain viewers/readers -- generate drama. They depress me, so I'm taking a break from their bs -- their attitude of hopelessness and despair is NOT good for recovery -- nor, I dare say, for a good life.

44. me, too...
I am really blown away and would be embarrassed by my public display of emotion were I not on pain killers:-)

I did tear up when I opened the package and realized who it was from -- and it came with the cutest card -- a drawing of a gorgeous dog!

When I read that Lieberman says we should wait until after the recession to deal with the uninsured, I want to scream. He so clearly is not a liberal or a democrat or even a progressive.

Nor a fiscal conservative.

The caring evidenced in this thread by DUers is an intrinsic part of the value system of the Democrats. We should be MORE concerned about the uninsured during a recession, not less.

And an argument has been made that it is actually MORE fiscally responsible to do so. It's not irresponsible or foolish- all other industrialized nations do it.

It's appalling that these privileged few are so comfortable publicly declaring that the status quo is fine with them. "Let them eat cake!" They should be publicly shamed, right after we take their healthcare away from them. I'd also like to point out to John McCain, who weighed in on this issue today (why? why?), and I'm sure I don't need to repeat his predictable position, that he would be ineligible for insurance with his pre-existing condition of skin cancer, were he not covered by the VA, medicare, and the great plan that our elected officials enjoy.

Why would we listen to these people, for even a moment? What they lack in compassion, they double down on with hypocrisy.

Oops, sorry about the rant!!!

I'm proud to be a Democrat, a liberal, and a part of DU.

I don't understand, though, why you put the link you did after your call to "sign up."

It links to Barack Obama's site.

Since I don't now, and never have, seen him as the solution, part of the solution, or willing to work on the solution, I don't know why I'd want to sign up with him.

I extend a heartfelt invitation to you, and to Obama, to sign up with the following, and be part of the solution:

54. thanks for adding links
The link I included allows those of us who want to organize like we did for the campaign to get tips on how to do some grassroots work in our own neighborhoods.

I found that highly effective during the campaign, and it makes sense to me to be a part of talking to my neighbors in an effort to educate people about healthcare reform.

I'm sorry you don't see the President as part of the solution, but I'm glad you found other ways to fight for this cause.
