Can someone please explain to me, or point out where an explanation can be found
regarding the Buddy List and the Sticky functions here at DU?

I get that I can make someone my buddy by clicking on the icon. And with so many DUers, I can see that it would be helpful to have a way to become familiar with a subgroup, I just don't see how having a buddy list connects me to anyone or has any other purpose.

Also, what's the sticky?

Thanks for any help.

1. The sticky is particular to the current fundraising drive. It will disappear.
I have other members on my buddy list, but I don't know if there's more I can do with it, like PM all at once.

I'm confident others will chime in with advice!

:hi:

4. Ooooops! I see now what the stickies are--at the top of the page after the GB's Big Board, with the
"Click here to learn more" link! I only wondered about it because I had read a post noting that there had been some distressing anti-GLBT stickies.

Anyway, now I know the stickies are there and will read them. Thanks!

2. Stickies are those little notes at the top of the page during this fund raiser
The Admins try to find ways to entice us to donate by making a bit of game of the period of fund raising. Before Valentine's Day, we can designate a DUer to get a heart for each little donation amount we pledge.

Just part of the way we blow off steam, and/or show appreciation to members we admire.

As to the buddy list, I use mine for two purposes. It makes it easy to send PM to DUers I like to stay in touch with off the publicly viewed forum. Some DUers have become good friends by means of communication beyond the forums. I believe there have been romances and even some marriages.

Another way I use my buddy list is to hone my skill at noticing posters who are not really supportive of our Democratic efforts here. Every now and then, I go through that part of my list to see how many have been tomb-stoned. Just a game I play with my self to see how well I spot trouble. I am a very trusting person by nature. Trying to learn not everyone deserves trust.

FWIW

5. Yes, I see now. Funny, what you said about using the Buddy List to track potential Freepers, etc. I
had thought about doing that myself, but I just didn't want to "buddy" those guys!

Thanks for the response. : )

3. The buddy list you make will help
you keep track of updates to your "Buddies" journals.. go to "My Du" and check down the page a bit.

6. Thanks. So, it's not like Facebook where it connects me to my "friends"? I can just buddify anyone I
choose?

8. Very good. So, it's just a handy list to remind me of the who those interesting people were? But.
shows up in my list of those people's posts to ID them to us as one of my buds? That would be cool.

9. no, it is not just a handy list
if, for example, havocmom was on your buddy list, then when you click on 'my du' to see if anybody has replied to your posts, then it would also show, below your posts, that havocmom had updated her journal with this post http://journals.democraticunderground.com/havocmom/118
