Unemployed and not able to afford insurance lady still against public option
Wow, just wow!

Mary Jo Toscano
Unemployed mother, Oak Lawn

When Toscano lost her job last fall at a metal and manufacturing job in Alsip, she knew her scheduled July surgery for a tear in her right rotator cuff had to be put off.

Her insurance would run out before she could get the needed physical therapy after the operation, a dangerous option that could cause her shoulder to turn permanently stiff.

Toscano As she looks for work, her arm hangs in a sling. On bad days, a prescribed ice machine cools down the pain with ice water running through another sling.

She officially became uninsured Wednesday. Maybe she'd just buy the Blue Cross Blue Shield PPO on her own?

Impossible, she says, after being quoted the monthly price tag of $3,166.
-snip-

But Toscano isn't thrilled at the idea of a government-run system, which Obama has touted as a way to insure people like her.

"I don't have enough specifics to say that I'm happy," she said. "Without knowing the specifics of the public plan, I would rather go through my employer."

6. And what makes her think her new insurance (assuming she got a new job which offered it)
will pay for this preexisting condition anyway?

What a moron!

21. HIPPA (1996) requires all employer based insurance to cover pre-existing conditions.
They may have a non-coverage period of up to a year however that is only for conditions diagnosed 6 months prior to start of coverage.

Employer plans that do not meet HIPPA requirements are not tax deductible for the employer.

5. This one's another beauty from the same article
http://www.southtownstar.com/news/1728565,082309healthreform.article

But Martin Shannon, self-employed in Oak Lawn, is afraid of losing control of a key personal choice. Despite assurances from Obama that Americans can keep their current insurance, Shannon fears one day he'll be corralled into a single-payer system unwillingly.

"They're going to price out regular insurance companies," he said. "The premiums are going to be so much lower, so it's only a matter of time before they take over. It's a disaster - a train coming right at us."

*************************************************************************************************************************************

OMG! Lower premiums! A disaster headed right at us!!!

13. what a dumbass! losing his "key personal choice" of paying too much for healh insurance
-- hey, probably if you ask nicely, your insurance company will let you keep paying the higher fees that nobody else will have to pay, even those with the same company!

I don't think they can raise his rates just to please him. They would have to raise everybody's rates equally. Which they do anyway.

27. First of all if she is a single mother who is unemployed she is probably
eligible for Medicaid in her state. She is indeed stupid if she has not applied. The guy will definitely be placed in a single payer plan someday since he will become eligible for Medicare. How is it that in America where all of us have access to at least high school education so many are so dumb? Maybe the problem is education.

Has she considered how she's going to get a job in the first place with her arm in a sling?

Um, ma'am, you just informed us, you HAVE NO EMPLOYER.

What makes you assume you're going to have one again real soon? What if you don't?

That is part of the point.

19. My favorite quote
"At least they're insured now, Isdell figures."

As Gomer Pyle would tell her: Surprise, surprise, surprise! You may be "covered", but don't think this is Las Vegas, where you can get a payout greater than the amount you paid in. Oh no, no, no, no, no, we can't have that -- how do you expect them to be able to pay the CEO if they pay out more than they take in? No, you'll be lucky to see 70 cents on the dollar of what you have paid in, but even then, it better be small chunks of change a little at a time, and not a big jackpot. That would require approval from 'underwriting' and they can ALWAYS reshuffle the deck to see what cards you should be dealt.

20. I notice that the age of all of the anti-reformers in this article
is well below that of 'Senior'. Many on DU seem to repeat that 'seniors' oppose reform, which is only true of some seniors, just as many of the youth or middle aged oppose reform, and others support it.
Just pointing that out.

It's ignorant and stupid related. In any case, seniors may have more time to come out as working age people are at work.
