When Toscano lost her job last fall at a metal and manufacturing job in Alsip, she knew her scheduled July surgery for a tear in her right rotator cuff had to be put off.

Her insurance would run out before she could get the needed physical therapy after the operation, a dangerous option that could cause her shoulder to turn permanently stiff.

Toscano As she looks for work, her arm hangs in a sling. On bad days, a prescribed ice machine cools down the pain with ice water running through another sling.

She officially became uninsured Wednesday. Maybe she'd just buy the Blue Cross Blue Shield PPO on her own?

Impossible, she says, after being quoted the monthly price tag of $3,166.

But Toscano isn't thrilled at the idea of a government-run system, which Obama has touted as a way to insure people like her.

"I don't have enough specifics to say that I'm happy," she said. "Without knowing the specifics of the public plan, I would rather go through my employer."

They may have a non-coverage period of up to a year however that is only for conditions diagnosed 6 months prior to start of coverage.

Employer plans that do not meet HIPPA requirements are not tax deductible for the employer.

But Martin Shannon, self-employed in Oak Lawn, is afraid of losing control of a key personal choice. Despite assurances from Obama that Americans can keep their current insurance, Shannon fears one day he'll be corralled into a single-payer system unwillingly.

"They're going to price out regular insurance companies," he said. "The premiums are going to be so much lower, so it's only a matter of time before they take over. It's a disaster - a train coming right at us."
