Schumer on Meet the Press.
saying medicare will go broke.

Question. If medicare is going to go broke, why don't we go directly to single payer, allow people to send their current insurance payments to the government instead of an insurance company and do a major repair instead of playing footsie with and enriching insurance companies via the public option and making insurance coverage/payments from everyone mandatory?

2. Medicare needs a larger "customer" base - include everyone
Some younger people may think they don't need insurance. That is, until they have an accident like my friend's son who got hit by a car while driving his motorcycle. It resulted in a head injury that made him eligible for Social Security Disability and <drumroll>, Medicare. Thank goodness the program were there for him.

3. I agree.
I think the single payer/Medicare for all would solve the problem.

5. Yes, he and Orrin Hatch were both playing the Medicare will go broke card

Other highlights:

Schumer says that yes a public option is essential although he referred repeatedly to an "even playing field" public option, which he estimated should be able to cut costs by 20% since it would not need to make a profit or have marketing costs. Not enough!(I could go on and on about his "even playing field" - suffice it to say I think it is what he calls the absolute minimum of what someone could conceivably call a public option if you stripped away government funding and I wonder if he would allow price negotiation)

Joe Scarborough made the point over and over that the Dems own the playing field and if they can't pass healthcare reform it would not be because they couldn't rally the Repubs, it would be because they couldn't rally their own Dems around their own President. Hard to disagree with. Also said the way Pres O should do that is by calling in the recalcitrants and saying to them - "What do you need, Claire MacAskill?(as an example). He said that is the way it is done.

Tavis Smiley raked President Obama over the coals for - lack of leadership, being too willing to compromise, not adhering to the goals he had while running. He was quite passionate worth reading a transcript. He had one memorable quote that his grandfather said which I forgot (ha!) but the beginning was "If you're going to stand, stand, ---- " and then I can't remember the rest, I think it was along the lines of

"If you're going to stand, stand. If you're going to sit, sit. But don't sit and pretend you are standing." Please don't quote that because I absolutely could have screwed it up entirely. Perhaps someone else here caught it accurately.

I really don't know what Orrin Hatch was all about, except to disapprove of everything in general.

mostly when I have insomnia because that's the only time he's on around here.

I like him. I hope he gets more exposure/better hours.

7. Another instance with Gregory let the RWer go on interrupting and spewing unchecked lies
When Schumer tried to correct Hatch, Gregory asked him a question and Schumer, showing some manners which the RW lacks, responded to the question.

Gregory allowed Dick Armey to spew unchecked last week and wouldn't allow Rachel to correct the lies. And he does it again.

Why am I surprised? He does this every week. No wonder MTP's ratings are in the toilet.

8. If the rest of us pay the cost of private insurance for a Medicare plan
it would work. However, the rest of us would have to buy in to Medicare by paying higher premiums then currently - but that works for me.

9. Explain your logic. A bigger pool of healthier individuals
should make them go down, not up.

14. Do they self insure?
If you change jobs, will it be provided through COBRA? Is it a family plan or individual? Also, are you young? Sorry for all the questions, I was just curious, not being some sort of smart *ss. I live in such an opposite world unfortunately.

10. Yeah.
My premiums would go up too but I don't mind because I think the end result of national healthcare coverage would be worth it.
