Could SF Public Option Work for Progressive Dems?
Bill Tchakirides, writing at Dailykos today at www.dailykos.com/story/2009/8/23/95423/7042 links to yesterday's New York Times article, "Public Option that Works" which reports on San Francisco's open enrollment group insurance plan, providing coverage to thousands who could otherwise not obtain it.

This supports the viability of a public option plan suggested by liberaldregs yesterday at www.dailykos.com/hotlist/add/2009/8/22/03158/2755/]. Liberaldregs suggests that any entity, public or private, could create such a self-insured plan, provided they had sufficient membership to support it.

Perhaps we could create a Progressive Democrats plan, through Democratic Underground, Democracy for America or other new or existing organizations. This would not only immediately provide coverage to many progressives who need it and recruit new progressives to the cause, but also oould be used as a tool for organization building. Membership in the plan might require a pledge to support specified progressive policies and/or to spend a minimum of an hour a month working on progressive issues.

1. That would be fantastic if there could be something like that. It would give people
an option to drop their present coverage. I think it would be very expensive to start up though. Maybe other DUers who have set up or run businesses might be able to come up with a business plan.

2. We'd Need To Get A Copy of SF's Founding Documents.
Since that model seems to be working, it would be helpful to get their founding documents and, if possible, any manuals they have produced relevant to the program. Are there any DU members out there who could obtain this information?
