'Pink, Pixie Dust ' Falling From The Sky!
Edited on Sun Aug-23-09 10:54 PM by Bobbieo
INSCRIPTION HOUSE, Ariz. – Some describe it as “like pink pixie dust” falling from the sky. Larry Bennett remembers it as little pieces of shiny foil up in the atmosphere. Jim Begishe and Ruth Begay recall seeing piles of Christmas tree icicles while out herding sheep.

What none of them realized was that these seemingly innocent, sparkling particles actually were radioactive “fallout” that sprang from the desert floor during above-ground atomic testing at Nevada Test Site.

1. A long time ago, maybe thirty years...
...out near Saguaro National Park East (then, Saguaro National Monument), near Tucson, a late afternoon summer storm had just passed through the area, and it was pretty humid. Suddenly, the atmosphere became pink and infused with sparkles. It was the strangest and prettiest thing I'd ever seen. The effect, whatever it was, lasted only a few minutes. In case anyone is wondering, I was not high. I was, however, very tired, having just driven into town at the end of a long road trip. It was almost as if I was driving through the end of a rainbow.

3. did you read some of the piece at that link?
"Between 1951 and 1963, the United States conducted 119 nuclear tests at the site, located about 65 miles northwest of Las Vegas. Of those, 97 were above ground and generated radioactive clouds that blew in an easterly direction. Though research later showed an increase in thyroid-related illnesses as far away as Albany, N.Y., only downwind residents in Arizona, Utah and Nevada can be compensated under the federal Radiation Exposure Compensation Act for specific types of cancer."

5. Gallup Independent reporter Kathy Helms is doing a remarkable job
as an investigative reporter on this assignment. I don't doubt she will win more awards because of the series.

As the editor of Native Unity I literally get nauseated when I read the horror stories she is covering. Can you imagine young children playing in that radioactive, sparkling dust. Now, they have all kinds of cancers if they are still alive.
