The key to debating R's/libertarians on healthcare --- most will admit they want the poor to die.
Seriously, I've found that in most debates with the right over healthcare, their feelings are rooted in their desire to live in a meritocracy that thins out the population and gives "deserving" people like them a little breathing room. They WANT the poor to die off en masse, and they WANT money to be the deciding factor in who lives and who dies.

They're like Col. Jessup, just dying to be asked if they ordered the Code Red. They WANT to say, "YOU'RE GODDAMNED RIGHT I WANT THE POOR TO DIE OFF!"

Try it sometime.

1. The answer to that may be - Make it a pocket book issue.

If the right can't get their heads around the national ethics of health care for all, bring it home to a personal pocket book issue.

i.e. - "One way or the other, we all pay for health care. Affordable insurance, fewer uninsured, means more money in your pocket."

4. And don't work to change their hearts and minds, if it can't be done.
Pointless. Work to make it a bread and butter issue for them and *for Congressional representatives*.

2. It's the old short sighted stupidity. They figure the poor will go away without a fight.

3. Ask them how long they can make it if they lose their jobs.
How long will their savings hold out? Will they be able to afford insurance, mortgage, etc.? Many of those losing their homes right now never thought they'd be in that situation either.

Ask so... you lose your job, you find out your wife has breast cancer but you no longer have insurance. Is she one of those people you want to have "die off?" Many people are just one, two, maybe three paychecks away from the streets.

5. The problem, is they never think it could happen to them.
The whole incentive for their "whatever happens to you is by choice" worldview, is to cloak themselves in the false belief that as long as they make good choices, nothing bad can happen to them.

To them, the poor got that way because they made terrible choices deserving of poverty. Death is an appropriate punishment for their misdeeds. They absolutely refuse to see how it could be them getting bankrupted by their insurers one day.
