Torture v idle conversation

I don't normally watch the History Channel, but last night I watched a show about the Wehrmacht, and in one part of it they described all the good information they got from a bunch of German generals.

They questioned them when they were first captured, and put them into rather harsh confinement , and then after a while they took them to a very lush country estate in England..put them all together and basically treated them as welcome guests. Know what happened then?

They started acting like welcome guests, and they spent hours conversing with each other, and spilling all kinds of information...valuable information.

Every place they were allowed, was bugged, of course, and there were people recording/transcribing every word they said.

they had comfortable accommodations, quiet living, good food, and felt secure enough to really let their hair down in each other's company.. Did they know they were being recorded? perhaps, but they still gave up valuable information they would have never given up, had they been tortured.

We see this with the "reality" shows of today. people start out "knowing about the cameras", but once they get used to it, you do see people saying & doing things they should NOT be doing in front of public cameras.. They forget...

Imagine if Guantanamo had been more of a "resort" setting, with prisoners allowed to converse freely with each other..while being monitored, of course.
